Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Topps publisher to designers: "Yes, that's ugly! But not ugly enough!! C'MON!! It's the nineties!!"A legendary bad year for Topps. And the printing made it worse. If you can get a good, crisp card, it's not as horrible. But it was so bad, and the competition kicked up, forcing the company to dramatically improve the quality the next couple years.

What hubris.LaterI'll do you one better. It was for a Sprint PCS store appearance so they couldn't use the term MFY (of course with MF not included), but there was a local radio ad touting an appearance by...it was either New York Baseball legend or New York Baseball fan favorite Jeff Weaver. I least I think it was Weaver, it was one of those big ticket items that the MFers brought in that severely underperformed in the 2002-2005 time frame. It wasn't a future HOFer/borderline HOFer like Brown or Johnson though, either way clear case of hubris and usual advertising hyperbole!
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I was NOT one better. It was one worse. Far, far worse. The Weaver thing may be typical ad-man hype. But it does not fly in the face of fans of the other team in the same market, for whom Gooden truly WAS a legend.Later
