bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 (edited) Mets acquire Kelly Shoppach for a player to be named later. He should get rid of that Red Sox picture on his Twitter page, @ShopHouse10.High strikeout rate:http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=3867&position=C Edited August 14, 2012 by Guest
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 (edited) while he's certainly better than any RHed C we currently have on the 40-man roster, and probably better than any others in the system too, i'm confused as to why you'd pick up a 32-year old part-time catcher like this in August of a lost season? He's the kind of player you pick up if your in a pennant race and have a need. Is he signed for next year, too? [on edit: no, he's not] Edited August 14, 2012 by Guest
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Acquired for a player to be named later. Even better would be acquired for a player to be named Thole. But this is nice, too.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Kelly fucking Shoppach, he was supposed to be a big star, or am I conflating him with Saltalamacchia?

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Woulda been nice six weeks ago, but welcome.Got six more weeks to pass Kelly Stinnett on our All-Time Mets Catchers Named Kelly list.

He's better than what the Mets have in the RH platoon, and it's a low-cost look. It's not like he's holding anybody back.

(who was a perfect 4/4 in Stolen Bases as a Met)
Guest metsguyinmichigan Guests Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 I suppose there is not chance the player to be named later is Bay.

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Slugs large against lefties, and is Nickeasesque against righties. I wouldn't be surprised if they want to test drive him in 2012 for potential usage in 2013.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Picked up his first 2 triples and his first steal (first attempt) this season so he seems to be getting faster.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Blue Jays moving to acquire Yorvit Torrealba. Cue festival of buyer's remorse.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 (edited) The timing does seem a bit odd. But whatthehell.Kelly fucking Shoppach, he was supposed to be a big star, or am I conflating him with Saltalamacchia?Shoppach was, in his day, considered a good prospect but, as we all know, that's only occasionally a sign of future stardom.I suppose you'd have to consider his career as somewhat disappointing particularly since he seemed to peak at age 28 before taking a pretty big dive after that. But, despite the low BA, he takes his share of walks (career walk rate = 0.89) and slugs often enough (19 of his 35 hits this season for XBs) to make the occasional difference. Haven't kept up on how he's considered defensively these days Edited August 14, 2012 by Guest
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 I think maybe we'll find out Rob Johnson hurt himself or something, that might explain the timing.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 And just think how quickly Johnson would have been run out of here if he [u:1i425s7c]hadn't[/u:1i425s7c] gotten that dropped 3rd-strike to Ike just in time.Finding the ball was one thing, but the boy damn near gave me a heart attack as he took his sweet-ass time getting the ball down there.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Somehow you'd figure Thole would be the one whose last name is similar to a brand of vacuum.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 This is funny@McCulloughSL: Terry Collins' assessment of Kelly Shoppach's defense: "He's a big-league catcher. If you're not Johnny Bench . . . [shrug]""
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 There have been rumors for years that the Mets wanted to get him.The fans too, because he has shown power in the past.Until today, I always thought he was a lefty batter.Sometimes you get what you wish for.Later

Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted August 15, 2012 Posted August 15, 2012 Now? Well, it's got Kelly Shoppach.
