Philly has drawn the least amount of walks in the National League. Milwaukee is 12th, 11 below the league average.

so maybe that helps.

That neither club has opposed Batista yet can't be a coincidence.

Batista actually pitched .1 against the Phillies. Acosta loaded the bases, Batista emptied them for him. 3 batters, 16 pitches, 10 strikes, Double, Single, Ground-out.

I would do that. There are days off scattered in May which would allow the fifth spot to be skipped a couple of times. I think Johan can pitch on four days rest. If you can skip the "Batista spot" once or twice, why not?

There is one off day in May, Thursday, and it doesn't really allow any normal skipping of the 5th spot.

They're not even sure they're 100% comfortable pitching Santana on normal rest every time. He's actually only done it once this year. (and won't do it again until next Wednesday) I think we might be past the problem stage of where we're worried his shoulder won't be up for it, but certainly not where you push him. Maybe in September if you need to get him an extra start, but not now.

You _might_ be able to massage it a little coming up to push back Batista starts a day or two, but you'd probably rather pitch him against Milwaukee than Cincinnati.

It's Terry's job to be patient where we are demanding, to make sure he still has a team standing in September. It's annoying, but I get it.

Doesn't really matter who's first. Having four guys like that on track is fine by me. Sort of the main reason I think the Mets gain an advantage as the season progresses. Greater chance that somebody emerges.

indeed. Meija is also on the roster, due to that 2010, so all things being equal..

He's also already proven he has at least some ability to get major league hitters out.

Batista left Saturday's start at Toronto after two innings with a minor muscle pull in his lower back. Batista warmed up to start the third, but had to be replaced by right-hander Jeremy Hefner. After Hefner pitched five innings against the Blue Jays, Mets manager Terry Collins said Hefner would take Batista's place in the rotation if a DL stint was required. Schwinden appeared in two games for the Mets in April, going 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA. After being demoted to the minors, he went 3-2 with a 2.54 ERA in seven starts at Triple-A.
