As per Heyman (who should really lose the smirky tone, for as often as he reports not-news as news).

The Mets would like to trade Mike Pelfrey, sources say. However, the likelihood of finding a taker considering his abysmal spring and high salary seems remote. Pelfrey has a 14.90 ERA this spring.

Sources suggest the Mets aren't enamored wigth Pelfrey's salary (no surprise there, as he makes $5.6875 million) or his body language. "He gives off a deer-in-the-headlights look,'' one A.L. scout said.

Thee Mets could release Pelfrey and be responsible for only one-fourth his salary, but that doesn't seem especially likely, either. Pelfrey, 28, has allowed 20 hits in 9 2/3 this spring, which isn't easy to do. Last year he was 7-13 with a 4.74 ERA, and he came to camp saying he was determined to make amends for that.

"The best thing for him might be to get out of New York,'' one rival exec said.

If I were the Mets, I'd consider trading him too.

I'd also be concerned about his salary. (I'm surprised they gave him that contract.)

It's also true that he'd be difficult to trade, and that there's no obvious candidate to replace him.

But as you say, where's the news here? It just seems to be Heyman wanting a reason to snark about something.

I thought he phrased it in a way (Rubin) that the Mets would certainly trade him if a team was specifically interested, but aren't actively looking to do so.

Note Heyman's quote "sources suggest" which means sources said something close enough for Heyman to spin it this way. The Mets aren't enamored with his _body language_ and then he cites an A.L. scout? (Which means the Tigers presumably, since it's the AL team the Mets have played, and Lakeland is close enough to the Yankees-Phillies rock for Heyman to crawl out from under)

And to presume Sandy Alderson his having buyers remorse 2 months later without Pelfrey having thrown a meaningful inning? With the finances only looking up since then? Hogwash.

I hear he's got an ugly girlfriend.

The only reason I give it any more credence than your usual throw-some-shit-at-the-wall-and-smirk-as-you-wait-to-see-if-it-sticks business from Heyman is that Pelfrey's agent is Heyman's only consistent source.

I think that only makes it _less_ credible when you view it through the "preliminary test the market feelers' prism of a pending Boras free agent a year or two out.

I think if you can make anything resembling a credible case, you always express disinterest in trading a guy right up to the time you trade him. It hurts the market to suggest otherwise and hurts the relationship with the player up until the time you find a deal, if you are able to find a deal.

"We're always interest in a deal that can help the team, but we have the utmost respect for _________. Our only focus with regards to him is to get him where he needs to be by opening day.

It's the typical non-sourced crap that sports columnists do all the time and never get held accountable for.
