With Byrdak down, the Mets are sorting through journeymen, guys not thought of as lefty-dominant, guys up from A-ball, guys who've been pitching in Korea, searching for a southpaw to round out the pen.

People joke about the job market lefties, but while none of these guys appear to be an obvious major leaguer on his own merits, one of them will likely get a uniform on April 4.

I went with Josh Edgy. They mentioned in the broadcast yesterday that his chances are being taken so seriously they issued him a respectable jersey number -- 54 -- rather than the No. 87 he had when he arrived at camp.

I kinda see he's got a chance to be a Joe Smith type, perhaps limited overall value but a role to play regardless. You don;t necessarily need a whole lot of experience for that.

Besides, the others are none too impressive. It doesn't appear they believe much in Hererra, James has been poor this spring, Olson's sort of a slowball expert rather than a deceptive-delivery guy.

I went with Herrera, but don't know why really.

I probably should've picked Carson, the only guy on the 40 man of those.

It sure seemed that Alderson believed in Herrera last September, openly contrasting the relief of going into camp in 2012 with two knowns (Byrdak and Herrera) with the question mark camp of 2011.

I guess I'm going with Edgin too, but I'd like to find out what changed their attitude about Danny Ray.

Yeah, he had to have believed in him at least a little bit. K-Rod was basically salary dump, but it'd be silly to take pure crap over crap that you might kinda like. And he pitched well so it seems weird they'd have suddenly soured on him.

But my gut tells me it will be Chuck James.
