Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I'm rarely able to have much of an opinion on these things. The only movies I've seen from the entire list are Hugo (with several mentions) and Rise of the Planet of the Apes (with one).
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 The nomination of "Extremely Loud ,,, " for best picture is unexpected. But the nomination of Max Von Sydow for Best Supporting Actor is not.(See the thread in this forum.)Wish I could predict the outcome of sporting events or Lottery drawings like that.Later
Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I've seen exactly zero the movies nominated.

Guest Mets Willets Point Guests Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 If they're going to nominate so many for Best Picture, why don't they give out more awards too. Maybe a bronze, silver, gold Best Picture trio.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I ended up not seeing a ton of movies last year. Not that I was intending on seeing most of the ones on the list of nominees.Did see The Help the other day though. Still haven't seen Moneyball. I should go do that.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 (edited) Interesting that they "only" went with eight when they had the option of going with as many as tenActually they went with nine, but the point remains. A shitty year if you can't even find a 10th film you like well enough to nominate... especially irksome when they purposely overlooked GIRL WITH DRAGON TATTOO, which was clearly one of the best movies of the year. Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted January 24, 2012 Author Posted January 24, 2012 how did my daughter get control of Edgy's CPF account?
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 I loved The Artist - I'm glad to see that it did so well and hope that it wins some of the trophies on Oscar night.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 5. Supporting Actress: ...Melissa McCarthy, "Bridesmaids"...9. Original Screenplay: ...Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig, "Bridesmaids"...Whoah, how about a hand for the movie that most divided the Crane Pool electorate?Surprised to see only nine Best Picture nominees? How about two best song nominees?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 There are as many nominations for John Williams scores as there are total for Best Original Song.Dragon Tattoo/Soderbergh seem like weird omissions, no? (Also, no Reznor nomination for that score, considering he took one for Social Network, and that this one worked at least as well?)Also, nothing for Drive? Wasn't that one pretty well-regarded, if just for the style/composition and Albert Brooks? And no Gosling noms at all?No DiCaprio nom for the Oscar-bait-y J. Edgar, either?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 24, 2012 Posted January 24, 2012 There are as many nominations for John Williams scores as there are total for Best Original Song.Musicals (all animated) from 2011 that couldn't manage to garner a nomination:Happy Feet 2RioWinnie the PoohI'm certain I heard a closing credits song or two in 2011 that must have been worth a crap.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Movies with nominations that I've seen:MIDNIGHT IN PARIS*MONEYBALL*THE TREE OF LIFE*TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPYJANE EYRENone of them scream "best picture" to me. Other 2011 movies I've seen:MELANCHOLIAIN THE LAND OF BLOOD AND HONEYCEDAR RAPIDS
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Vic Sage wrote:how did my daughter get control of Edgy's CPF account?I have to say, your daughter has quite the potty mouth.Seriously, not even Breaking Dawn could produce an original soundtrack song up to the nominating standards of, say, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"?I tell you, from Woody Allen to Baz Luhrmann to Wes Anderson to directors of far lesser talent, the notion of the original song seems to be slowly fading from movies, in favor of directors playing DJ, using material with a proven track record of exactly what kind of response it'll get from an audience.
Guest sharpie Guests Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 I read somewhere that a panel of "experts" (which includes Eric Clapton) make the determination for best song. Any song has to have something like 80% of the votes to make it (Hall of Fame style) to a maximum of five. If no song makes it, then the category doesn't exist that year. However, if one song makes it, the second highest scoring song gets a nomination too. So, we don't know if both of them cleared the bar this year.I noted that some crappy Madonna song won the Golden Globe and she doesn't get a nomination. She used her time at the podium to talk about the movie she directed being so meaningful. I hadn't heard of the movie previously.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Eric Clapton, sleeping at the stick again.Meanwhile, this guy sold his soul four times over to get a 2010 nomination and came up empty.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 My day-of prediction that this was going to come down to a contest between MONEYBALL and THE DESCENDANTS is out the window. All the momentum is clearly behind THE ARTIST which I believe will eventually find its place in history as the greatest silent movie released in 2011
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 OMG - this Cirque du Soleil production is horrendous!
