bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Players for almost nothing... not a rejected Dire Straits lyric but today's Rule 5, or V, draft. Will the Mets get a keeper like Beato or a dud like Emaus?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I think the Rauch and Francisco deals are still unofficial and I guess that's because they want to keep a roster spot open for a Rule V-er.A grossly disproportionate amount of V-ers are bullpenners, but I wonder if they might not try to grab a backup shortstop.OE: Cubs have six open roster spots. Brews have five.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 My prediction of who they'll grab: San Diego middle infield prospect Drew Cumberland. My prediction of who they'll lose: Binghamton righty Rhiner Cruz, but he'll be re-united with Wally Backman before the summer is over.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Officially it's the Rule [u:hnru1g4g]5[/u:hnru1g4g] draft btw and not Rule VAnyway, BA has this as the draft order with the (I assume current) size of each team's 40-man roster1. Astros (38)2. Twins (38)3. Mariners (37)4. Orioles (40)5. Royals (40)6. Cubs (34)7. Padres (40)8. Pirates (40)9. Marlins (40)10. Rockies (37)11. Athletics (39)12. Mets (38)13. White Sox (36)14. Reds (40)15. Indians (40)16. Nationals (37)17. Blue Jays (40)18. Dodgers (40)19. Angels (38)20. Giants (40)21. Braves (36)22. Cardinals (36)23. Red Sox (38)24. Rays (39)25. Diamondbacks (35)26. Tigers (40)27. Brewers (35)28. Rangers (37)29. Yankees (39)30. Phillies (39)
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 And then I dig a little further and learn that he's trying to come back from a neurological disorder. Oh well, my money's on the table. Go, Drew!
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Who the hell is Rhiner Cruz? Adam Rubin's posting that he's likely to be lost too.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 And there goes Rhiner Cruz. Listen to the excitement live!http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?topic_id=6350584&content_id=20013543

He'd probably be maddening to try and carry for a full year on a big-league roster at this point.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I thought they might take a chance on Gorman Erickson, the only decent catcher available this year.Later

Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 I guess I'll predict more of nuttin'. Adam Rubin saying that Sandy plans to leave the Winter meetings at 11:15 (not 11:10 or 11:20?). Maybe he leaves the AAA phase to a leiutenant.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 Mets pass in AAA phase and phinal phase also.Minor league pick taken from them is short season catcher Hector Alvarez.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 8, 2011 Posted December 8, 2011 And sometimes the crop just isn't that inspiring as a total of just nine players were taken in the ML phase this year. I suspect that number is below the usual. Hell, I remember one year when the Pirates alone lost four or five.
