Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 This is inspired by the Darryl Strawberry Award thread. I was going to post it there but I didn't want to clutter that thread with a big clunky chart.Anyway, I was thinking that the 2011 had a particularly weak offensive outfield. I ran some numbers (using only stats generated by the starting outfielders in each game) and here's what I got. As bad as 2011 was, it looks like it was actually better than 2010:yearABRH2B3BHRRBISBAvg.OBPSlg.1962178322245960116320927.257.340.409196317611784025415491919.228.295.3601964183321845765125121212.249.306.3811965176618339767104717118.225.284.3541966174520343061123620225.246.308.357196718041874706273718029.261.307.3641968183818345675184718046.248.302.3851969190228452479156224839.276.348.4311970189127252087216125350.275.350.4401971175421947366115621341.270.353.416197217502084336975620115.247.330.39119731961231495885442329.252.318.370yearABRH2B3BHRRBISBAvg.OBPSlg.197418232024667974521610.256.324.3811975189724951783105324813.273.332.4111976183322644278135922227.241.306.3941977174922346779134020236.267.338.3961978180623646480223919439.257.328.39019791815229525106184120367.289.368.4351980185324151783194022979.279.345.4091981118513229246192612152.246.316.3831982194722851781143119661.266.308.3691983191724448870156522978.255.304.4091984185825848483146425078.261.315.4241985182427149486176925464.271.345.4501986199630854093217728194.271.347.454yearABRH2B3BHRRBISBAvg.OBPSlg.19871886325531114198526891.282.352.4971988194430653898128528294.277.338.471198918482464558776322580.246.314.403199017922944898468627356.273.349.4701991181523947988124921873.264.332.407199217242294289164219575.248.329.3811993182527946582235719452.255.314.419199412251572914363815413.238.301.3761995164524444264133818637.269.336.39319961909297575105285024977.301.352.4641997183526347798155222550.260.326.415199817712184259695221638.240.322.392yearABRH2B3BHRRBISBAvg.OBPSlg.1999186829354296949209120.290.370.4302000193330052510065923536.272.350.421200118201994679573917935.257.319.3812002179322646769124918752.261.318.3942003173822946210185021130.266.329.419200418232534479789126246.245.318.4572005183127349610598326749.271.341.4742006187729650011598429146.266.346.4722007183526453010876727954.289.346.46520081804283504110125025242.279.351.43720091831272531115224222944.290.354.4462010181022747191184121958.260.325.39820111790260471104114824656.263.344.414
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Beltran solidified rightfield as almost nobody has since Strawberry left.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Saying it was better is like saying the patient was moved from the emergency room to life support.Later
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Please. As you can see from reading up the chart, it can and does get far worse.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I wouldn't have guessed 2004 as the homerunniest Met starting outfield ever, but Kablammeron with 36 in center helped, flanked by Floyd and Hidalgo.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 Seven outfield homers from an ephemeral Eric Valent that year, with six more coming as a firstbaseman or pinch-hitter.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 2011: The 19th best OPSing (starting) outfield in Mets history.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 I'd have definitely kept these numbers a secret and quizzed this material. What a goldmine!
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 20, 2011 Posted October 20, 2011 2001 , awful , no surprise , Payton, Shinjo and? Cedano?

That was the year of Matt Lawton. Benny was still here, Timo played himself out of a starting role and Darryl Hamilton, Mark Johnson, Alex Escobar and Joe McEwing were among those who got their reps.

About 45 of those wins came from teams that realized they were overmatched and forfeited.
