Certainly while the 5th starter situation is in flux/tryout mode it's worth doing that, at least as long as you take care so as to not hang yourself with 40-man and/or 10-day assignment snafus.

More importantly is this brutal transaction from tonight which, while justifiable, seems pretty vindictive, and avoids the greater problem --- that was avoided too under Randolph and Manuel --- that designating inning-specific roles for pitchers is hatefully counterproductive.

I associate lefties with odd numbers. Particularly sevens. Numbers 27, 47 and 57 are taken, while 17 seems to be on the shelf and 37 retired. Carrasco left 77 kind of unapproachable for the time being, so I'm going with 72.

Numbers that high are better if there's some sort of story behind them.

- Jim Bouton was assigned 56 during one spring training and then kept it for most of his career after he unexpectedly made the team that year. He liked to think it reminded him how close he was to not making the team.

- Czech-born Jaromir Jagr wore 68 in the NHL in tribute to the Prague Spring year

- Pitt Penguin Sidney Crosby wears 87 because of his 8/7/87 birthday
