"Keep dropping, Rendon."

That sounds something some hoods would say, tormenting a nerd on a later episode of Happy Days, before Fonzie enters to save the day.

Beats being called the best ice hockey player in Peru

Can we just start calling him 'Captain' now?

Brandon Nimmo, OF, East HS (Cheyenne, Wyo.)
ESPN/Churchill: Nimmo is a high-upside play here and a refreshing pick for the Mets. He's a good athlete and could hit for plus power down the road, but his left-handed bat profiles to play in a corner outfield spot, where his arm fits, too. Nimmo brings a good work ethic to the table and he squares up fastballs regularly. His lack of competition -- his high school does not have a team -- made it difficult for him to get seen by scouts, but he's found a way to get noticed, including an impressive display on the showcase circuit last summer.

Heres Nimmos comment from Baseball America:
With a lean, 6-foot-3 frame with projection remaining, hes a good athlete and one of the best sprinters in the state. He tore his right ACL playing football during his junior year in 2009 and spent most of last summer playing with a brace on his knee. Hes an above-average runner when hes healthy, which helps him on the basepaths and in center field, and theres more to his game than just speed. Nimmo has a pretty, efficient lefthanded swing. Hes short to the ball and has outstanding barrel awareness, consistently squaring balls up and shooting line drives to all fields. He has a good eye at the plate and should be an above-average hitter. As he gets stronger, he could add loft to his swing to turn doubles into home runs.

BA's take:
Many expected the Mets to take a college player when Sandy Alderson (general manager) and Paul DePodesta (scouting and player development director) took over the organization.
But scouting director Chad McDonald, also in his first year with the organization, took a liking to Brandon Nimmo, the best high school player ever out of Wyoming. And he persuaded the front office to take the player he wanted, drafted Nimmo 13th overall.
Nimmo was believed to be putting out a big signing bonus number in the $2.5 million range. The Mets must have confidence that they can make a deal with Nimmo and keep him from going to Arkansas.

High upside's cool.

But is it me, or did he have the feel of a guy who'd be around later?

There was a comment in an ESPN mock that the Mets would like to wait until 44 but don't think that he'll still be there.

But Jim Bowden agrees on ESPN with LWFS's suggestion:

Jim Bowden: Best picks so far based on where they picked: O's,KC,WSH,Cubs....worst picks where they picked: Mets,Astros

John Sickels on Nimmo:

The Mets have been conservative in recent drafts, but the new front office promises more investment in the farm system. This is a good test of that philosophy, for Brandon Nimmo has been floating large bonus demands to skip college ball at the University of Arkansas. The Mets are wise to invest in him: he's got an exceptional set of skills and tools.

A 6-2, 185 pound left-handed hitter, Nimmo is a one of the best athletes in the draft and features both above-average speed and power. Most surprisingly, he demonstrats excellent strike zone judgmetn and offensive polish, all the more remarkable given that his state lacks high school baseball. He does have experience in Legion ball and showcase events, and Nimmo has less risk than you might expect given his background.

Nimmo also offers excellent makeup, and this looks like a very fine pick for the Mets.

I don't know shit about shit, but that's the impression I got. Whatever, let's see that potent Nim-Rod.

The Mets haven't had a great record with the two Springers they've had on their books.........for that matter, neither has Crane Pool.

So, maybe I'm not so right about that.

Mahtook keeps dropping below most draft projections, as does supposedly-polished HS lefty Daniel Norris.

My new hope-he-drops crushes: Norris, Jackie Bradley, Jr. (well-rounded College WS hero/SC OF).
