Ollie rival Pat Misch giving up runs in consecutive innings (one unearned) and the Astros up 5-1.

The Class of 2008 gives us a run in St. Lucie. Two-out double by Daniel Murphy and Nick Evans singles him home. Nats 2, Mets 1.

meanwhile Emaus and whoever's in RF now misplay a popup for an infield single. Murphy may be in the lead in that race.

Michael O'Connor entered with second and third, two one out and Rick Ankiel coming up. He struck him out, just like a LOOGy ought to do.

Then he stayed on and sweetened the pot by striking hopeful righthanded-batting firstbaseman Chris Marrero.

Made a 'real' error earlier today too.

That's been my impression as well, but I haven't watched much either. more listening.

I don't think Turner, Murphy or even Castillo have looked great either defensively though.

Emaus looked bad when I saw him in person on Saturday, with a couple of mis-plays that weren't errors in your boxscore.

Valdespin, on the other hand...

Plus, the kid's looked half-decent at the plate, too-- a triple and single today in two AB.

Yeah, Valdespin has been a nice surprise, but he's a long shot candidate as it is right? would be surprised with 6million here, rule 5 there, that he makes the team.

Yeah, Valdespin's probably headed to more northerly precincts to do his thing while the Mets get a longer look at Emaus and whoever joins him at the Citi keystone. Interesting idea for the future, though... maybe as soon as later this year.

Yes, but he's not projected there currently. He's got 47 games there in his career vs. 175 at second.

MEANWHILE, Daniel Murphy doubles in the eighth and Cory Vaughn (who, like Sam and Frodo, shouldn't even be here, but apparently caught a break on a split squad day) brings him around with a homer off of Atahualpa Severino, all-time minor league leader in wins by a guy name Atahualpa.

Bingo-bango-bongo, the Mets and Nats are tied and we go to the tenth.

Can Valdespin play shortstop?

23 games last year. 47 overall (17 errors though)

so probably. Got promoted to Binghamton late last year. so only 23 games above A right now.

A late rally in Kissimmeedeadly, also, with two in the eighth:

[list:63n8z8ys][*:63n8z8ys]Valdespin triples.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Pascucci grounds out. (Valdespin scores.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Cecliani doubles.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Campbell walks.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Ceciliani steals third. (crazy reckless.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Puello erases Campbell with fielder's choice ground out. (Ceceliani scores.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Gronauer strikes out as the tying run.[/*:m:63n8z8ys][/list:u:63n8z8ys]

Then one more in the ninth:
[list:63n8z8ys][*:63n8z8ys]Pea strikes out looking.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Hu reaches on error.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Den Dekker pops out.[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Valdespin singles and becomes the tying run on first. (Hu's on second.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Hu steal's third. (Hu's on third. This steal qualifies as absolute madness.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Pascucci singles. (Hu scores; Valdespin goes to third and the tying run is tastily ninety feet away.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys]
[*:63n8z8ys]Ceciliani goes down swinging. (Hearts break.)[/*:m:63n8z8ys][/list:u:63n8z8ys]

Houston wins 5-4.

We lose in St. Lucie also, as Met I've never heard of Dale Thayer comes on for the tenth and gives up a run, which the Mets are unable to answer.

This afternoon's version of the Astros were managed by sexy-exy Met Al Pedrique.

He went to Chico State.
I'm wondering if he is the first, or only, major leaguer to come from that school.

No way. There was Chico Carrasquel, Chico Walker... Matt Chico. Lots of others, I'm sure.

I didn't want to go there.
Fortunately (or was it unfortunately?) you did.
LOL!

A number of draftees, but no major leaguers yet.

So neither of the two MLers who came from Chico State was actually drafted from there -- Thayer was signed as a amateur FA; Dalrymple preceded the draft.
Meanwhile all of those who were drafted have fallen short (at least so far).

Chico State's an actual school? I always thought it was, like, a cutesy euphemism for the state pen.
