so its never been used, i take it?

And why the sadness over Raffy-2-Yanks? Was he an "icon", too? I must've missed the memo. Last i remembered, he was a no-hit/no-field SS that Davey sat in favor of Hojo and Mitchell whenever he thought he could get away with it.

1986 World Champion Met becomes a 1988 Yankee. Do the math.

yankee apologists on twitter, that would Klapisch and the like are selling this as a guy who "demands the ball in a big spot"

That's Jeter's influence, already at work.

Strangely, it seems not.

I thought it would take place over Christmas weekend, giving us all a love-thy-enemies opportunity.

The Yanx traditionally seem to drag their feet on these things to the point where not only don't they announce a signing until every i is dotted but they usually don't like to admit that an all-but-done transaction is even in the works.
One thing we'll get to see if and when he does sign is the approximate slot of the draft pick we'll pick up. It's probably in the 40s someplace depending on how Pedro stacks up statistically against other ranked FAs changing teams. Which team signs him and when is NOT a factor.

Our 'Pedro Pick' in next year's draft currently sits at slot #42.

With three 'Type A' FAs yet to sign (Carl Pavano, Grant Balfour & Raphael Soriano) that will drop one slot each if/when those players change teams. There are also four more 'Type B' players (Felipe Lopez, Aaron Heilman, Trevor Hoffman, Chad Qualls) who might rate higher than perpetual Pedro and therefore bump that pick down one more notch when they sign. As it stands now, only Adam LaRoche rated higher among Type B's than our now-departed lefty slinger.

Didn't LaRoche sign with Washington already?

Yes, and so far he's the only 'Type B' to net a higher supplemental pick than PF (DBacks get pick #41 for losing him).
What we don't know yet is which, if any, of the remaining Type Bs out-rank Pedro according the rankings that Elias does over the last two seasons specifically for this purpose, and therefore will earn his ex-team a higher pick.

Here's hoping our Yankee pick is a guy who dominates for a generation.

The "Pedro Pick" for June's draft is cemented at #44.
The only ranked FA yet to sign is 'Type B' infielder Felipe Lopez and if/when he does sign the compensation the BoSox will receive will slot in at #47 so nothing before that will be affected.

Currently our overall draft picture looks like: #13, #44, then 71st, 101st, 132nd, and then every 30 picks after that.
If Lopez does sign a deal and does so with someone other than the Sawx then all those picks after the first two get pushed back one slot.
