Press conference to start at 11 a.m., carried live on SNY and Mets.com.

Sandy Alderson wrote:
Dear Mets Fans:

We are pleased to announce we have hired Terry Collins as our new Manager.

Terry's a lifelong baseball man who comes with the entire package - leadership, preparation, emotional commitment, and the drive to win. We believe Terry's knowledge of our players, energy, intelligence, intensity, and direct approach will make an immediate, positive impact both in the clubhouse and on the field.

Terry spent six years as a major-league manager, leading the Anaheim Angels and Houston Astros to winning records and second-place finishes in his five full seasons. He managed the Angels from 1997-1999 and the Astros from 1994-1996, compiling an overall record of 444-434 (.506).

We will introduce Terry to the media this morning during a press conference at 11:00 a.m. at Citi Field. SNY and Mets.com will carry it live.

Terry will work closely with the Baseball Operations department with the goal of delivering a team of which you can be proud in the short and long term.

Thanks for your ongoing support and interest.

I just noticed that both our manager and our GM have androgynous first names.

They've got to turn the press releases over to me. They've just got to.

I'll have eto try to remember to listen. If it even matters.

Also, Terry, Jerry, Willie, (Artie?), Bobby. lot's of -y/-ie endings there. Wonder if it really came down to Wally or Terry.

Baseball clubhouses, as surely as gravity will pull you down, will tag people with diminutive nicknames. I couldn't stand how Davey Johnson's post-game chats were peppered with references to "Mexy," "Millsy," and "Nailsy."

"Nailsy"?

You ever listen to Girardi interview with Francessa? He gets so cutesy with the names that you'd think he was a 12 year old girl (the braces help with that as well) Hughesy?

Tracksuit with a lengthy tale in the Snooze today tracks down the actors in the Anaheim drama (except Mo Vaughn who's clearly painted as the villain). Lupica with the predictable "You have to win in this town!" piece.

I just wanna see if they present him with the No. 1 jersey he's worn elsewhere as a skipper and whether they'd address that it currently belongs to Luis Castillo.

Turkey!

I always loved that photo :)

And then there was Eddie Stanky.
Baseball-reference says one of his nicknames was Mugsy.
The infielder had played for Brooklyn. But when he became a New York Giant, Brooklyn fans called him Stinky.

We're off to a great start as the online feed starts w/the show already in progress.

Why isn't Jay Horwitz instructing the press? The Mets need a lawyer to do that? Is Jay asleep already?

Am I imagining it or did Willy Randolph wear number one at his intro press conference?

Has he called them the Knickerbockers yet?

Yes, he did. It also looked like a knockoff jersey, not an official one.

Terry: "I'm not an evil devil." Shades of Christine O'Donnell?

That would have been a great opening: 'I'm not an evil devil ... I'm nothing like you've heard ... I'm you'

"Im not the evil devil people have made me out to be."

Did he really have to say that? I predict a defensive 2 years coming. Ugh.

When there's dual respect, players take on the personality of the manager. And if that happens, there will be a lot of energy at Citi Field.
