TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Valentine would have made me far more interested in the Brewers than I want or need to be. Right now I'm pretty indifferent to them.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 That's how I am with the Phillies. Although I live in their territory, to me they're just another out-of-town team, albeit one that's become very annoying over the last four seasons.

I don't know what the deal was in Florida, though.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted November 3, 2010 Posted November 3, 2010 M.I. probably doesn't get the significance of the Alston inference. In the mid-'50s when then Brooklyn Dodger manager Charlie Dressen was coming off two consecutive pennants and asked for a multi-year contract he was told that the team did not give multi-year deals. When he insisted they told him to walk and, in his place, hired the relatively unknown Walter Alston who then proceeded to manage the Dodgers for 20-some very fruitful years all by way of 20-some consecutive 1-year deals.Granted that would never be done today but that was the reference.Speaking of HoF managers, word is out that Sparky Anderson has been placed by his family in hospice care due to complications from dementia. He is 76.
