Some moves coming today.....Hairston is a major league deal , plus a move for Young , so two 40 man roster moves coming....this is all via Rubin but Collins says Castillo and Ollie are safe and going to ST.....Rubin speculates that Nikeas and or Luis Hernandez are vulnerable .

Mischie seems fairly valuable as an emergency backup starter. at least more so than Stoner.. but maybe.

They grabbed some crappy minor league catcher recently didn't they? But I don't know if it'll be Nickeas either.

Really, I imagine they put some guys through waivers and are waiting to see if they clear. like Armando Rodriguez.

Well, yes, but he'll be number 2 for the first 8 games of the season because of Paulino's suspension.

There's hardly going to be an emergency that requires him before opening day, though. They have nine other starters on the 40-man, plus would-be starter guys like Carrasco and Stoner.

He can also be traded during his DFA period.

you drop Hernandez and Nickeas. They're both likely to pass thru waivers. Then, when you have to settle the 25-man roster after ST, you DL a pitcher on the 40-man (cuz no team gets out of ST unscathed), then add whatever backup catcher you need to to the roster, for the week before Paulino comes back. When Paulino returns, you drop the backup from the 40-man and add back whoever you DL-ed, or whomever else you need.

no. DL'd players still count on the 40 man. (Unless it goes to 60-day or whatever)

plus, a player can only be outrighted to the minors once in his career, which probably doesn't become an issue, but no raeson to waste it if you're planning on adding themback.

I had guessed Pridie (honestly I think even the Mets just saw him as a warm body until better opportunities came along) but I thought they'd also DFA Hernandez.

Oliver Perez, the bell is tolling, as it's becoming harder and harder to build a roster that squeezes you in.

One more pitcher kind of makes things look untenable for him. Untenable for Castillo, also, depending on how health shakes out.

Scott Hairston: half black and half MexTex, from the largest baseball family (perhaps matched only by the Delahantys?), stretching back three genterations and into the Negro Leagues.

Yes, they have to decide what to do with him (release being one of the possibilities). But the move took him off the 40 man roster.
I tend to use release and DFA interchangeably, but they really aren't.

Outfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis and catcher Kai Gronauer are the two prospects not currently on the 40-man roster who have been invited to major league spring training camp.

Gronauer, who hails from Germany, and Nieuwenhuis also were in camp last year and represented the Mets in the Arizona Fall League.

Terry Collins intends to have a smaller camp this year to maximize instruction and reps for the core players.
