Unless Castillo had the runs, there is no excuse.[/quote:abx304mi]

He's only had 27 of them this season. Runs, I mean.

Stay ready, Luis. It's the least -- the absolute least -- anybody asks you to do.[/quote:abx304mi]

Regardless that he should've been playing at various points when we weren't.

but this has happened too much, with too many different players. Castillo, Takahashi in that Santana in Philly game, Santos pinch hitting for Castro last year..and those are only the ones we've caught.

Santos wasn't unready to pinch-hit for Castro because he was playing grab-ass with Bobby Bo in the clubhouse; he was playing warm-up catcher in the 'pen.

I am Carlos Beltran.

I am not done yet.[/quote:3cx4f6bq]

I would give a pinky toe for this to presage a season so shockingly good that Sunday becomes known as the "I'm Not Done Yet" game.

Either he left on his own, or they told him to go there and forgot. We have half a dozen bullpen catchers. Can we not keep all our players on the bench when they're needed?

We have half a dozen bullpen catchers? What time of year was this?

not on the roster, but you got guys back there that do this job, particularly instead of what was one of the only available pinch hitters at the time.

But this was a long time ago, I'm not looking to break it down, just wondering why it seems like there have been multiple instances of guys not being where they were expected to be, and why we're being made aware of it.

And even so, it doesn't really matter, since we're getting a new staff that will likely have their own set of rules about where players need to be during the game.

As far as I know, there's one bullpen catcher in Dave Racianello. Maybe Sandy Alomar, Jr. was doing some catching, maybe not. I don't know who these half dozen guys are.

Nonetheless, the implication in your post is that Santos wasn't serving the team, but failing them out of some sort of self-interest. He was clearly there because that's where he was asked to be.

if that's where he was asked to be, why was Jerry looking for him? I wasn't trying to imply it was Santos' fault. Have the guys you need in the bullpen in the bullpen, guys on the bench on the bench. That's at least three incidents that I remember and that we know of and that seems too much of a coincidence for me. 2, half-dozen, whatever. Why did we have active players warming up pitchers late in a game? (in a game that as it stood wasn't going to need even one more pitcher) You've got Racianello and Alomar, as you said if you need to have two guys warming up. Just seems sloppy to me.

Backup catchers have participated in the warming up of relievers in the bullpen since the dawn of time. On every team.

It suggests that Jerry hadn't thought about the possibility of using him to pinch hit until he actually decided to use him to pinch hit.

Come on, you're circle-jerking me, here. I should have quit after "two, half dozen, whatver."

probably. I'm having a rough day and feel like slamming my head into the wall both on the work and personal level and just generally feel like screaming and arguing and picking on Jerry Manuel.

"I've made a lot of mistakes. But you can't tell me that Santos doesn't have a quick swing! Why, not pinching him for a red-hot Castro would have been crazy like a currency based on hair, or a Jeff-Francoeur-centered marketing campaign!"
