Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Heard Buster Olney bring up his name this morning in connection with the Mets.At least one reason is that he's relatively cheap [remainder of a $5.1mil deal + $2mil buyout vs $10mil 2011] as compared to other possible targets like Oswalt [at least $25mil left], Lilly [pro-rated portion of $10mil], or Westbrook of Cleveland [pro-rated portion of $11mil]. Now whether the money situation is just a tack-on reason for him being linked w/the Mets or the sole source of it is tough to stay.Myers is having a decent season in Houston: 18 starts, 6-6; 3.41; 1/1 H/IP; 89-K/38-BB in 121 IPThe ass-hole factor wasn't mentioned.
Ceetar Grand Central Contributor Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I don't really like Myers, professionally or unprofessionally. I'd much prefer Lilly or someone like that. As was mentioned elsewhere, Dickey's probably pitching himself into the picture for next year too, and I think it'd be preferable to not sign another long term pitcher like Oswalt.
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I really hope counting every penny is not an issue with improving the ballclub this month.A pro-rated Lilly would be only a million-ish dollars more than Myers' pro-rated salary plus buyout. Now, I'm not a millionaire, but if we can't afford the extra dough for a lefty who doesn't beat his wife, then we don't deserve to contend.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 The more of this kind of stuff I read, the more I believe the rumors that the Wilpon's are averse to spending money they may not have. Thanks Bernie!
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 You say "Ted Lilly" and I think "Traded for Hideki Irabu."

It's hard to know whether the Mets are after Myers because they can't/don't wanna increase the payroll or whether the the Mets-Myers rumors are invented or gain steam based merely on some guy's assumption - correct or otherwise - that the Mets can't/won't spend.

Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Brett Meyers is a douchebag. The Mets would probably like him as an "8th inning guy"
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I can't say much in favor of WCDB Brett Myers (Two T's or one? M-Y or M-E-Y? I don't care!), but he'd probably not put up with the everyday usage the way the current squad is. He'd probably get in a shoving match with Jerry, causing the team to investigate the incident, release him two days later with a statement of support for Jerry, then cut Jerry loose after the season and insist that the fight didn't enter into their thinking at all.Get Myers NOW!!!!

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I think [crossout:1s3onb9f]Mel Gibson[/crossout:1s3onb9f] Brett Myers would make a fine addition to the 2010 Mets pitching squad.
