I suppose it is.

It seems, though, that the reason for the rule is so that there's a limit on the number of local Sunday telecasts that ESPN can steal from each team, not because they want a lot of variety on Sunday nights.

Here's a question: why is this game being played at Fenway?

Since this modern day "tradition" started to emerge over the last decade or so of having the defending champ being one of the teams in the opening Sunday Night slot, it seems to me that those in possession of the WS trophy have always been the home team ... I mean, I thought that was pretty much the point.

Bingo!
The tradition used to be the first game was played in Cincy - the oldest team in the oldest major league. And that tradition was good enough for about 100 years.
I can see an AL opener in Boston, a traditional (as in old) AL franchise. But how about it being the first day game to start on day 2, Bud?
