Stokes, by the way, was a five-time winner of the Schaefer Mets Relief Pitcher of the Month award, twice in 2008 and three times in 2009.

Getting Pujols to hit into a double play with the bases loaded (6/22/09) has to be the high point.

He was a good situational guy for us, but his control unraveled as the innings piled up. Still, he didn't come completely unhinged like a few Mets relievers have over the past couple of years.

The Mets only trusted him to do so much, but he made a pretty good showing for himself and he certainly proved worth the "risk" of picking up. That said, I think you gotta move these easy-come, easy-go placeholders while you can, get some good and move onto the next.

I think my best memory was finding his wedding photos on the Internet.

The other pitcher was Jaime Cerda, whom we remember fondly because he was very nice to my kids on a couple of occasions.

For about ten minutes there in first ten or so days of September 2008, I was amazed we were riding the Stokes-Ayala combination through the eighth and ninth innings. Imagine such an unlikely setup/closer pair clearing the way to a division crown!

Imagining, alas, was all we were left to do.

Stokes was another of those guys I was always forgetting when trying to remember who was on the roster at any given moment. Every year there's a couple. In 2009 there must have been a dozen.

The Mets lost on the last day, so I certainly didn't think the season was definitely lost until it was definitely lost, no matter who was in the pen.
