Reed really wasn't no Endy Chavez, was he? I mean, when Endy was a fourth outfielder, but when pressed into the lineup he certainly didn't get worse, did he? As soon as outfielders started going down this year --- or, in Murphy's case, being overwhelmed by the job --- it became readily apparent that Reed wasn't fooling anybody.

Even as merely a defensive replacement, he was no great shakes. He was Darren Bragg, is what he was.

Had him here the whole year and he came up empty on PotG awards. He leaves the Mets (presumably) still looking for his first homer.

(I guess technically he's merely a free agent, and hasn't caught on with anybody else, so memories can wait. But who can sit still with a thread title like that?)

I strongly got the sense that he was a part that Jerry Manuel really didn't want to use, for whatever reason.

I can't imagine they'll bring him back.

Bad throwing error while being Delgado's first replacement, then really fell on the depth chart. I think maybe he told Jerry he could play and Jerry never much trusted him after that.

Look up stuck to the bench and you'll see his mug , the one time he did get a chance at playing time he didn't impress. Did he play three games in a row or something like that and that seemed to be his shot.There were plenty of games where you might have expected to see him play but he wouldn't be, weird.


Seemed like a nice enough guy though.

It says something about your abiities, I think, to not be able to get off the bench in a year when Angel Berroa and Wilson Valdez see significant cameos, and to nail the worst OPS+ on the team (100+ PAs) in a year when Alex Cora and Omir Santos are leading starters.

Also, not even an INTERESTING brand of suckage.

He got into 126 games, so he wasn't quite stuck to the bench, but he only got 24 starts --- fewer, indeed, than Sullivan --- so he certainly wasn't taken seriously at any point.

That Manuel tried him before Murphy at first base (using some variation of the logic that if Murphy can't catch the ball in left, how is he going to catch it at first) is on Manuel, I think. That Murphy was actually mostly pretty good at first was a pleasant enough surprise, but it shouldn't have surprised Manuel or anybody (a) that Murphy was at least fair to average, and ( that Reed would be cluess at first and wasting his one useful asset of being a ballhawk in the outfield.

First week of the season, Reed with a PH single in the top of the 9th to tie the game (which the Mets lost in the bottom of the 9th).

Also, 126 games, 177 PA-- it got to the point where it seemed like Manuel still kinda liked the glove, but seemed to be actively trying to keep him away from the plate. Considering how he did when he got there, I can't blame Jerry.

Every year there's at least one guy I keep forgetting is on the team. This year there were several. But Jeremy Reed led the pack in this obscure regard in 2009. No offense...which seems appropriate where Jeremy is concerned.

But 2003 is tricky. I remember Tony Clark well enough. Good thumpers off the bench are rare enough in Metland. And I guess you can say Jay Bell made himself memorable by putting up such a profoundly memorably unmemorable season, but how about Graeme Lloyd?

Jay Bell an oversight on my part. He belongs with Clark for 2003. Bottalico came up in May '04; Lloyd went in the veteran purge during the summer of '03.

Reed had a pretty good PH average IIRC -- problem was they were all singles which pretty much limited his usefulness to late-inning OF defense and when you had to PH to lead off an inning.
