KNIFE & TWIST: Jeff Francoeur's surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb turned out to be more complex than originally expected, although the outfielder still expects to be ready for spring training. Because Francoeur played with the injury for the final month of the season, the thumb ligament wore down and shriveled, necessitating a transplant from his wrist. Francoeur first got the cast off last week. He expects to begin hitting off a tee on Jan.1 and be cleared to hit pitches two weeks later. THUMBS UP: Alex Cora, who had surgeries to repair torn ligaments in both thumbs, began playing winter ball last weekend with Caguas in Puerto Rico.

Amid reports that Escobar suffered a setback in his comeback from shoulder injury, Johan Santana told The Post today that he played catch with Escobar as recently as last Friday in Fort Myers and everything is fine with the right-hander.

"[The Mets] have him on a program, so they are going to take it slow with him," Santana said.

GM Omar Minaya said nothing has changed with Escobar, whom the Mets signed in December with the idea he can compete for the eighth-inning setup role.

"The plan all along has been we're not going to rush Escobar," Minaya said.

Freak injury time! Derrek Lee hurts back in chair collapse By 'Duk I know Alex Remington was just writing on how Derrek Lee(notes) has been prone to injury the past few years, but this is ridiculous. According to manager Lou Piniella, Lee had just sat down for some pregame chow on Wednesday when the clubhouse chair beneath him decided to call it quits. The Cubs first baseman dusted himself off for an appearance in an exhibition game against the Rangers, but he left early to receive treatment for his 34-year-old back. From the Chicago Tribune: "He was eating before the game and the chair just collapsed on him," Piniella said. "That's why we got him out of there after three innings." Piniella said Lee was fine and would be back in the starting lineup Friday. To blatantly steal a joke from Lookout Landing, you're a loser if you had former Mariner Carlos Silva(notes) in your Cubs chair breaking pool. The newly-svelte Carlos Zambrano(notes) and Geovany Soto(notes), too. The sad part is that if Lee comes back on Friday, this won't rank very highly on the list of recent Cubs' freak injuries. Those candidates would include Sammy Sosa(notes) sneezing his way out of the lineup, Carlos Zambrano emailing his elbow out, Kerry Wood(notes) slipping near a hot tub, Alfonso Soriano(notes) hopping his way to an MRI and Ryan Dempster(notes) breaking his toe while jumping out of the dugout to celebrate. Some of those � and more � are detailed in an old post we did on other freak baseball injuries. It's clearly a jungle out there for some of these guys.

Mets plan on playing Reyes in some minor league games today. Minor league exhibition rules are pretty fungible, and according to Kevin Kernan, the plan is to bounce from field to field DHing, getting a bunch of at-bats in, but not playing the field, and running only to first and getting replaced by a courtesy runner if he reaches.
