Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Mets select Carlos Monasterios, A/AA RHP from the Phillies.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Stats and stuff:http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Carlos%20Monasterios&pos=P&sid=milb&t=p_pbp&pid=467856KenDavidoff The #Phillies had just 33 on their roster, so that tells you what they thought of Monasterios. Says one official: "We'll take the 50 grand."
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Seems unlikely that he'll stick on the big league roster for the whole season. I guess the Mets are hoping the Phillies won't buy him back when they (almost inevitably) get the chance.

Of course they will. And - anyone check out this guy's minor league transactions? He was part of a trade for Bobby Abreau and Cory Lidle. At least Omar gave the writers an angle for a future story. And - Did anyone else pick up in those stats a reason for drafting him? I couldn't.Later
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 In the rule five draft, you're almost invariably trying to look beyond the stats. Was he grabbed in the major league or minor league round?

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Sheesh. I had just placed an order for my custom Carlos Monasterios Mets jersey!
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I hadn't even met his wife!Wayne Krivsky helps the Dodgers pull a Wayne Krivsky!

Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Wait, the Nats drafted the guy and returned him to the Yanks as the PtBNL, or the Nats traded the right to the pick?I realize it's all the same in the wash, but if rule five picks can be traded, it may be an interesting precedent toward potentially allowing draft picks to be traded.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 It's been described the whole time as the Nats [u:3hq0kmli]trading the pick[/u:3hq0kmli] - so I guess that's allowed in Rule 5 land since, unlike the amateur (Rule 4) draft, there's one set price for all picks.
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Pirates used pick #2 to grab Rockin Doc's guy John Raynor from the Marlins. Could be worse, he almost was a Yanqui!!

Does anyone remember when the Mets acquired and then traded Carlos Monasterios all in the same day, and MFS62 wondered whethere there would be a "Memories of Carlos Monasterios" thread? I do.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 Meanwhile, the Mets go wild in the AAA phase of the draft, choosing RHP John Lujan from the White Sox, 1B Marshall Hubbard from the Mariners, RHP Rolando Valdez from the Astros, and LHP Orlando Lara from the PadresAnd then in AA phase - RHP Johan Figuereo from the Nationals

Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 I'm glad they used the minor league portions of the draft. They desperately needed to.

That's why Hoffman was traded as a PTBNL; the Nats made the pick (also the reason there was speculation the MFYs might have them pick the lefty Kroenke from their OWN system, so as to keep from losing him for another year-- he ended up going to 'Zona, I think).
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2009 Posted December 10, 2009 The Yanx trade last week of Brian Bruney to the Nats for a PTBNL (Nats talking about using him as a closer) [/quote:5nfo8nkc]Looking forward to the Mets feasting on this guy......
