Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Darling, Franco, Gooden, McCarver.
Guest themetfairy Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I went for The Sign Man and Gooden.I will vote for Darling in future years, but I think I'll feel better about voting for him after he has a few more years of Mets announcing.
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Darling, Doubleday, Franco, Gooden.

Theoldmole Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I can't believe that Karl Ehrhardt has gotten more votes than Al Jackson or Tim McCarver. He was colorful, but not that colorful. My #4 vote was between those two, and I went for little Al.

dgwphotography Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Well, since I HAVE to vote for four:Karl Ehrhardt, Nelson Doubleday, John Franco, Dwight Gooden
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 As much as I relish voting for Doc, I can't stand voting for Franco, but I do it anyway because there's too much of him to ignore. Karl Ehrhardt and Dave Kingman carry the rest of the day. The Tim McCarver of the Mets '80s got strong consideration and wasn't necessarily negated by the later, irritating Tim McCarver. It's just that Kingman was so much the symbol of what little Met power there was for so long.
RealityChuck Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Darling, Ehrhart, Franco, and GoodenNo way that Kingman would ever get my vote. He's one of the greatest wastes of talent in the history of baseball.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Darling, Franco, Gooden, McCarver.[/quote:rrgc05xz]Darling: Key role on a championship team, but the tipping point was his return as a broadcaster. As someone else noted (I think metfairy) he continues to build his credentials with each year in the booth.Franco: Mainly for longevity. If Kranepool is in, then Franco should be in.Gooden: His total Mets numbers reached, more or less, the Koosman level. Add in the sensation that he was in 1984 and 1985, and I'll say it's enough (although it's arguable) to offset the drug stuff and the Yankeeness.McCarver: He gets points for longevity, but mostly for waking up Ralph Kiner from his Lorn Brown-induced coma and, along with Steve Zabriskie, making it fun to watch the Mets again. The difference between the 1982 broadcast booth and the 1983 version was a total transformation, and Tim gets 80% of the credit for it. (Another 10 to Steve, and 10 to Ralph for meshing so well with the new regime.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I have to say that, though I have him clicked above, I'm a little shy about Gooden. Though he and Strawberry are always one relapse from disaster and embarassment, his recent profile suggests to me that he's concerningly a little further off the straight and narrow than Strawberry.I need to weigh that more closely as we approach the final round. The other point of view on how to deal with such concerns is to get him in now while he's allegedly straight.Considering the legacy of his numbers alone, it's, of course, a no-brainer.I think we serve him and us best with full reconcilation being used as a carrot to draw him as far as possible into recovery and personal and legal restoration.

One could comeup with a few Mets within years of each other that were more of a wasteof talent starting with Gooden, Strawberry, and Jefferies.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I'm voting on the players Met career and not what he or she did elsewhere.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Well, I don't think anybody's pushing for Warren Spahn or Nolan Ryan.
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Darling, SignMan, Franco, Gooden[/quote:3pyvywon]RD: Spent his twenties intermittently contending for Cys for the '86ers and several other contending teams. Also, the mikework. In essence, he's Sid and McCarver rolled into one candidate.KE: Emblem of the first Shea era ('64-'81) and of Met fan culture-- and of Shea's place in American culture at large-- in general. (This one almost went to McCarver. Close but no cigar, and I grew up with him in the booth.)JF: Longevity. Captainship. Kind of encapsulates Mets fandom's roller-coaster relationship with the team, no?DG: First baseball player I ever loved. Also... duh.
Guest Swan Swan H Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Doubleday, Franco, Gooden, McCarver. I disliked Ehrhardt from the day he held up the sign reading 'Is Ed Kranepool Over The Hill?'
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 I made a case for Kingman but nobody's refuted it, they just not voting for him. F this
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 i guess I could have posted a ballot all-MLB like and invited folks to fill in 1-10 names.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Gooden, Franco, Darling, and Doubleday, if only to infuriate Wilpon.
Guest Rockin' Doc Guests Posted November 24, 2009 Posted November 24, 2009 Gooden, Franco, Doubleday, Darling
