Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Fox Sports just put up a graphic indicating that Joe Girardi is the 7th MLB player to play for a team and then manage that same team in the World Series.Naturally, they did not identify the other six. It occurs to me though, that this question has a very Metly connection. So, can you name all six?
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Valentine. Baker. Guillen. Hornsby. Others?
Guest Kong76 Guests Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 (edited) Berra even though he only played a couple with the Mets? Edited October 29, 2009 by Guest
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Willie Randolph....oh wait....
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Phil Garner - Houston & Ozzie Guillen - ChiSox ... in the same series no less
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Got it-- Hargrove! Hargrove, right?
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 Hargrove never played in a WS
Guest LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr Guests Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I think I misunderstood the question. He meant, play for the team in a WS AND manage them in a WS, I was thinking play for the team, and then manage them in a WS.By the stricter standards, Hornsby and Martin are correct. The others are swing-and-misses.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Posted October 29, 2009 I didn't see the graphic but I'm assuming it's played for a team in the WS and then later managed that same team in a WS.Otherwise I suspect there'd be a lot more than just 7.

Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Author Posted October 29, 2009 There's way more than six. Maybe I got the parameters wrong - it was only on the screen for a few seconds. But there's others that are coming up here and in my mind.1. Ozzie Guillen2. Phil Garner3. Bobby Valentine4. Yogi Berra5. Billy Martin6. Gil Hodges 7. Tommy Lasorda (though his cup o coffee was as a Brooklyn Dodger and not an LA Dodger)8. Dusty Baker9. Joe GirardiSo that's more than 7 right there. Maybe the question was "Played IN THE WORLD SERIES for a team and then later managed it to the WS," which would rule out Guillen, Garner, Berra and Hodges, most of these guys in fact.

He managed the Yanks in the '64 Series they lost. (Cards?)So... Berra, Hornsby (Cards AND Cubs, apparently), Martin. We need 4 more.
Fman99 Old-Timey Member Posted October 29, 2009 Author Posted October 29, 2009 So, if you're not counting guys who didn't play in a WS for the same team (like Berra and Hodges for the Mets, for example) and also rule out the player/managers, like Hornsby, then who's left?1. Joe Girardi2. Billy Martin3. Yogi Berra (managed the '64 Yankees)4.5.6.7.Who else?

I don't know that he counts.
