A Boy Named Seo Old-Timey Member Posted October 12, 2009 Posted October 12, 2009 Stars Ellen Page (Juno) as a Texas high school beauty pageant contestant who trades her purty pageant gowns for the cool and excitement offered by the world of roller derby.Marcia Gay Harden plays the conservative, pageant-veteran mom that Page is rebelling against. Daniel Stern plays her understanding, beer-drinking, football-loving pappy.Drew Barrymore directs and plays one of the roller derby girls. Also in the flick are "Maeby" from Arrested Development, the adorable Kristen Wiig from SNL, Juliette Lewis, Eve, and Jimmy Fallon as the roller derby PBP guy.I dug it.Trailer:
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Saw it, dug it as well. Gave it 8 elbows.Fallon was good in a small part, the guy who played the team's coach was also very funny.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I have trouble imagining Drew Barrymore presenting anything that isn't, sort of, insultingly dumb. Am I alone there?
soupcan Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 I agree with you but that's her schtick, man. It appears to have served her well.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Yeah, but I mean in terms of serving myself as filmgoer, thus the adverb "insultingly."
Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Seems to me the whole idea of making a "girl-power" flick starring Juno as a roller-derby chick is a $ure-fire winner, and about the least creative thing ever.
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Exactly and Pat Zachry. She seems to think she's carved this niche as the one who walks the line between exploitation and empowerment. Her publicist will tell you that she's seizing the vehicles of exploitation and turning them into weapons of empowerment, or something, but that's just self-serving revisionist nonsense. Charlie's Angels is Charlie's Angels is Charlie's Angels. Own it.Hey, Drew. I'm just not that into you.
Vic Sage Old-Timey Member Posted October 15, 2009 Posted October 15, 2009 Drew Barrymore = parts of Gracie Allen + Carole Lombard + Jody Foster (but not always the best parts)i like her anyway. I always root for her and she makes me feel protective of her.

TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 This film is set in Austin, TX and the surrounding areas, yet none of the major characters have Texas accents. WTF?
Edgy MD Site Manager Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Well, Drew Barrymore, Inc. has ben getting the details wrong for a long time now.
ashie62 Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Chick FlickEllen Page is a serious bitch in training
TransMonk Old-Timey Member Posted February 16, 2010 Posted February 16, 2010 Page's best work IMO (and most "bitchy") is in this one: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424136/
