Arizona Fall League

While most teams have already announced their Arizona Fall League contingent, the Mets are being coy, announcing only two prospects so far assigned to the developmental league. Both assignees --- Ruben Tejada and Ike Davis --- came a long way in 2009 after struggling in 2008, so the Mets are pushing them a little harder here. Davis will be first completeing his commitment to the World Cup of Baseball in Europe.

Typically a team commits six prospects to single team --- three hitters and three pitchers. The last hitter will likely be an outfielder, and I'm thinking Kirk Nieuwenhuis, a guy hitting so well the last two months of the season that one would love to see his season continue. Thole and Fbomb have already done the AFL, so I think they're ineligible.

I've always thought the AFL was a way of "fast-tracking" prospects..Didn't know you couldn't particpate twice.

Be nice to see Ike and Ruben excel

I think Thole has earned a shot at a platoon with Santos next year, don't you?[/quote:265puwrz]

I don't see why not?? They will probably sign the cheapest free agent catcher with 10 fingers & 10 toes also.

Santos, Thole, Cancel & Catcher yet to be signed would be my best guess

Adam Rubin sez:

Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada and 4 pitchers: Jenrry Mejia, Scott Moviel, Eric Niesen and Josh Stinson.

Moviel is a 6-foot-11, 21-y.o. righty who went 4-5, 3.56 at St. Lucie this year.

Niesen is a lefty out of Detroit and Wake Forest U who just turned 24: He whiffed 85 guys in 81 innings at AA Binghampton this tyear.

Stinson is 21-y.o. rh reliever, averaged a whiff per inning in St. Lucie.

All 3 of Moviel, Niesen and Stinson need to walk fewer guys.

I'm a bit concerned that Ike Davis is going to play a full minor league season, then play baseball in europe(??), and then the AFL, before reporting to camp again in february. tell him fuck europe.

Nah, let's send him to Venezuela for December and January too. Then we'll make him wash all the Wilpons' cars.

I'd think we'd like Thole to 'learn' catcher by playing 'every day'. Therefore I don't think he makes the team barring hitting like .500 between now and April 5th. My opinion of Santos is that he's a bad catcher, a bad base runner, a bad hitter. I don't want him anywhere near the Mets next year. I wouldn't mind a guy like Jose Molina, who the Yankees won't resign, as a solid backup type guy. I don't know who I'd want to be the regular catcher, but maybe the Mets would be willing to overpay on a one year deal for a rental, hoping Thole is good enough to start in 2011.

Tejada looked good when I saw him in Spring, the Mets apparently liked him as they even brought him up to play in the Red Sox exhibitions. I wonder if they're grooming him as Castillo's replacement.

According to Mets Inside Pitch:

Ike Davis, Ruben Tejada, Eric Niesen, Scott Moviel, Mejia, Josh Stinson and possibly an outfielder...likely Nieuwenhuis if so. But nothing has been confirmed about him.

They will all be playing on the Surprise Rafters
