Guest John Cougar Lunchbucket Guests Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 Wore No. 6. September recall. I don't remember him much either.
G-Fafif Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 As a pinch-hitter, Mendoza broke up Dustin Hermanson's no-hitter on a sixth-inning single that could have been ruled an error, 9/14/97. That was going to be that (no more Met hits, that is) until the Mets got to Hermanson in the ninth, then into the Expos pen and then, finally, a two-out grand slam by Carl Everett off Ugueth Urbina to bring the Mets all the way back from 0-6 entering the final frame to a 6-6 tie. Won on Gilkey's three-run blast in the eleventh. Kept me Believing the Wild Card was not out of reach even though it ultimately was.Carlos Mendoza had nothing to do with the remarkable comeback, but he did get that hit, which Fran Healy kept suggesting, while it was still a one-hitter, could be changed later to an error by Red Foley, to which Howie Rose scoffed, sure, it will be a retroactive no-hitter and the Expos will run out of the clubhouse and celebrate on the mound after everyone's gone home.
Met Hunter Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2009 Posted September 11, 2009 That's not the same Mendoza coaching the SI MFYs. Our Carlos has darker features. I think he's living back in VZ. I noticed Wikipedia has it wrong about him coaching.
