Peeps at work are talking about it. I wanna have a look.

Not sure why the alien's face is blurred out in the trailer, but I saw it somewhere else and it looked really cool.

Peter Jackson (LoTR) is behind it all.

Finally caught it, with the LWBH in tow.

Alien landing as apartheid-- "District 9" is essentially an 80s Township--concept was nifty. The handling was... well... a little disappointing (ham-handed characterization of everyone but the human lead, the lead alien character being an FX-driven version of noble "credit-to-the-race" stock character in innumerable race dramas, the second half's being a battle-on-battle-on-battle pileup). The action's pretty pulse-quickening, though, and the effects are pretty damn seamless.

Compared to more mindless mindless fare, it's great. Compared to everything else, well, it's a good start.

I went 6. If feeling more generous, maybe a 7.

On level where this film succeeds is its ability to sway the audiences emotions; you start out despising the aliens and gradually throughout the course of the film start rooting for them. Apart from the things LFWS already mentioned, a particular gripe I had was with the mockumentary format- much of the film is shown through newscasts, security cameras and interviews. That's fine, but the fact it oscillates between this format and "live action" (because it apparent that some scenes could not be shot in this format) is annoying and you begin to wonder whether the mock format is just a lazy narration device. Oh yeah, it's also quite gorey.

Just watched this, it was good but not quite great. It dragged there in the second quater but once Wikus got going the movie took off. That it had me caring about the prawns in the end is a triumph I suppose. I didn't mind the camera work as seen though the newscasts , the movie in a way reminded me of 28 Days. Not sure if the movie works for me in a different country..having it set in SA and JoBurg was brilliant.

Gotta like he SA accent.

Oh the aliens themselves looked like cousins of the alien in Predator.

This isn't my kind of film. I appreciate that it's well made, but I just don't have the stomach for it.

Well, as far as Oscar-nominated ham-handed treatises on tolerance go, this beats the f*ck out of Crash.

I'd kick it up to 7 now, I think.
