Met Hunter Old-Timey Member Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 That 1941 series in remembered for two plays, the Owen passed ball (dropped third strike) and Al Gionfrido's catch of Joe DiMaggio's long fly ball in deep left center field in Yankee Staduim. An interesting sidelight is that is was the last year in the majors for all three players.Later[/quote:1go2650o]I want to correct this post. The 1947 series was when Gionfriddo made that catch. And it was after that series that Gionfriddo, Cookie Lavagetto and Bill Bevens ended their careers. Bevens and Lavagetto were linked in that series by Cookie's walk off hit in the ninth inning of Bevens bid at a no hitter. The only hit of the game. Cookie was a coach for the 1962 Mets.

Was going to correct/edit it this morning, but you beat me to it.Thanks.Later
Met Hunter Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 As I get older, those facts get foggier and foggier. Don't bother stating much any more. Most young guys today laugh if you bring up names like Cookie or Gionfriddo. Stories my dad used to tell me growing up.

Don't know if he ever sued our own loveable Kong for name infrigement.Later
