Over in the Prospect forum there's an article mentioning Bard Holt was signed by a Met scout named Marlin McPhail who previously inked Bobby Parnell and Ty Wigginton (I assume he's their Southeast scout).

Loving that name, I go and look him up only to find Edgy DC's all over the case in Marlin's UMDB profile: Former Lynchburg Met of the early 80s.

He was also a Sports Illustrated "Face in the Crowd" amatuer athlete in 1968:

I mentioned that Eric Brown is a mid-round talent he scouted. Dylan Owen was also.

That article you triggered Marty Noble to write about Casey Hodges has Ron Hodges mentioning that he saw McPhail scouting his son. Maybe, rather than putting the Mets on to him as we had hoped, Noble ruined the Mets exclusive.

Where did you learn the notion that McPhail has been known to play it close to the vest? I wouldn't doubt it though that's a dated concept in Obama's new age of transparency.

I was wondering if he was a relation to Lee , Larry and Andy MacPhail but they spell the last name differently, which I found out when I did a bit of checking.
