En un partido muy cerrado, los Leones hab�an tomado ventaja en la cuarta entrada con sencillos de Jes�s Feliciano, Andy Gonz�lez y Carlos Rivera para empujar la carrera y se encaminaban al �xito con sobresaliente actuaci�n del lanzador H�ctor Mercado.

Despu�s de seis entradas y dos tercios, Mercado dio una base por bolas a Jos� Bautista y fue cambiado por Jos� Vaquedano, quien recibi� un cuadrangular del emergente Mart�nez para decidir el encuentro.

Alfredo Sim�n permiti� cinco 'hits' en siete entradas con siete ponches propinados y se llev� la victoria, con salvamento de Julio Ma��n, quien lanz� la �ltima entrada en blanco.

Con la victoria, los Tigres, campeones defensores, llegaron a un juego ganado y uno perdido y mantienen en sus manos la posibilidad de retener el cetro, mientras los Leones se han complicado porque con dos reveses consecutivos, necesitan ganar cuatro juegos seguidos y esperar por una combinaci�n de resultados para, quiz�s en un juego extra, disputar el cetro.

La segunda jornada terminar� hoy con un mano a mano entre los Venados de Mazatl�n mexicanos y los Tigres de Aragua venezolanos, que marchan invictos.

I saw a Mets mano-a-mano (I hope that's right) match-up in the early game yesterday as De Los Santos faced Jesus Feliciano http://mlb.mlb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?n=Feliciano%2C%20J%20%20CF&pos=&sid=l162&t=p_pbp&pid=440351 in the 8th inning with De Los Santos trying to protect a one-run lead (F-Mart hit a 2 run homer). DLS got the first batter, went 3-0 on the next (pitching away the whole time), threw ball 4 but the batter swung and missed (Cookie Rojas, doing color, got mad at that), and the batter lined out. Then Feliciano (lefty-lefty matchup) hit a double that just missed going out. DLS was replaced and the run didn't score.

It's hard following these games because the players don't have their names on the unis (unless they are all named "Orange"). A graphic appears when the player comes to the plate but if you miss it, you're lost.

Here's a funny thing I found in a writeup of the opener while searching for nooz on Casanova: ]The Mexico-Puerto Rico game was moved back an hour from its original scheduled time of 6 p.m. for the opening ceremonies that started with the presentation of each team, including national anthems. Singing Mexico�s national anthem was Julio Preciado, a well-known singer in the country, but after his per-formance he might as well move to a different country. Preciado sang the national anthem out of synchronization, which the crowd replied with boos and whistling. It was so bad the microphone was turned off before he could finish the song. After the microphone was turned back on, Preciado blamed his bad performance on an awful feedback from the sound system. No matter what the reason, Preciado left the field amid boos and cups of beverages thrown at him.

I don't know if this is in another thread, but Fernando Mart�nez went back to NY for a lookee at his elbow or something at the request of the Mets. Dude is starting to get the injury-prone tag?

Newsday: The Mets announced Friday that Fernando Martinez, their highly regarded young outfielder, has a strained right elbow and will rest for three weeks before resuming a throwing program. So this at least prevents him from hitting the ground running when ST starts. On the other hand it's not like he'll be out of shape after playing much of the winter and, assuming this isn't a long-term problem, it might almost be a good thing seeing as it'll take the idea of starting the season with him in Queens from creeping into anyone's mind.
