Well, I fell alseep and napped through most of the game.

Turns out I didn't miss that much. Another good win; solid 'pen, good Oliver again. Very pleased.

There were some anxious moments in the 8th but they seem to have gone unremarked upon.

Yeah, I was playing the game at doublespeed off the DVR but after getting Zimmerman to start the 8th, Smith wasn't getting it done (2 walks in a row).

Nice job by Duaner to get a K for the second out, and then a groundout on a nifty play by Wright to end it.

I really think the 'pen will be fine if they can just get some more rest (which they have had lately).

Thoughts on the game:

  • Ronnie Belliard has lost weight since the beginning of the season, but somehow looks fatter when he plays short

  • At times, it looked like major leaguers vs. minor leaguers out there.

  • The bloom is so off Ryan Zimmerman. You may or may not recall that Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus strangely predicted he'd have a better season than David Wright. That's not coming to pass. At least not this year.

  • I called Delgado's homer.

  • I didn't call the Schneid's.

  • The Nat's are having a Roberto Clemente Day. What the heck? How about a Tim Raines Day or a Gary Carter Day or a Dennis Martinez Day?

  • Nats fans left during the Mets ninth inning rally, turning the ballpark into Shea South for the bottom of the ninth. Folks celebrated the free lease on their home away from home by promptly booing Aaron Heilman.

  • Pete Orr is Canadian. Any chance he's related to Bobby? That was a heckuva slapshot he hit off Perez. He was the fifth outfielder in Atlanta for a few years, and he's just the sort of going nowhere guy that the Nats are throwing at-bats to these days. I'd root for someone like him --- it's harmless enough --- if he didn't put a no-doubter game briefly within reach for the Nats.

  • They don't know what to play at the ballpark --- they mix krappy kuntry for the Virginians with old school soul for the 40+-year-old African Americans who barely remember the Senators, and then hip hop for the younger African Americans who aren't exactly knocking the turnstiles over.

  • Loutish (radio host quality lout) Braves fan behind me waxing poeticallly about Andruw Jones being the greatest centerfielder ever --- still. His Nats fan buddy wanted him to shut up, and told him Torii Hunter was better, and he practically blew a nut. I threw Paul Blair out there, but he insisted Blair was a leftfielder. I've got to leave the louts alone. Charlene tells me that I have a problem of always needing to poke the bear.

  • I hate the mindgame being played with me when I go to pee in a urinal and there's an ad staring back at me telling me to take this drug if I'm having trouble peeing. SHUT UP!

  • Up until Orr's triple, the Mets had scored 18 un-answered runs.

Heilman for the 9th was an odd choice.
Maybe he already had him warming before the Mets re-broke open the game and figured as long as he was up ya might as well bring him in.

And, while I'm not going to go all backup-QB syndrome and pronounce Kunz the next closer yet, as long as he's here you might as well use him.
So far Jerry seems reluctant to use him in tight games ... or in non-tight ones.

Back from Nats Park. AG/DC correctly conveyed the feeling of "Shea South" in the 9th. It was a wonderful sight.

Dopey Nats fans (redundant) did the wave. Really. The guy behind said that they never do it so it must be the Mets fans. I turned around, gave him a look and said "Please."

The 7th & 8th were nerve racking. Duaner looked very good.

There was a husky Mets fan with orange hair. As he walked by me, I said "Rusty Staub" and he laughed. Of course, he must hear that all the time.

TMF: yes, Teddy lost. To me, the President's Race is too predictable. Abe Lincoln wants it more.

As we left, my younger son (15) and I walked out and sang "Takin' Care of Business." That was special. Then a guy with a trumpet near the Metro was playing "New York, New York."

oi FK, you can't put these things out there and not the answers when one tries.

Ryan Zimmerman is a coffeehouse folksinger. Not a good one, either, but he has this one song that's OK. He knows it's better than the rest so he kind of hates playing it.

Aaron Boone is a hunting guide who tinkers with cars on the side. He's made a lot of money investing in pharmaceuticals, but still takes folks out shooting.

I guess I really didn't phrase that too well since I wasn't designing a quiz. Was just simply making up job descriptions based on the sounds of their names.

DC's 'Aaron Boone' is better than mine.

i thought it sounded like a fun game to play during an IGT. try and match them with real life namesakes jobs.

I was high on remembering Shawon Dunston at the trade deadline.
