So Channel 11 spent Saturday celebrating its own 60th anniversary by airing re-runs of a bunch of shows that made up much of its programming over the years: 'Three Stooges', 'Odd Couple', 'My Favorite Martian', etc.. I wasn't much interested in most of it, but I did stick a tape in for the two episodes of 'Get Smart', one of my favorites from back in the day.

The first one they ran was the original pilot. Brought to you in full living black and white, the plot starts with the Chief assigning Max to hook up with the as-yet un-met 'Agent 99' so the two of them can foil KAOS's latest threat to world security. '99' will reveal herself to Max by uttering the code phrase 'The New York Mets Win Double-Header'.
"Yeah, I'd like to see that" says Max (air date - Sept 1965).
Then, at the Grand Central Station rendevous point, Max briefly mistakes a child for '99' when the kid reads an actual newspaper headline out loud which reads 'New York Mets Win Double-Header'.
"So you're 99?" Max asks.
"No" the kid answers, "I'm only seven and a half".

By the time the real 99 shows up and utters the key phrase, Max dismissively replies, "Yeah I already know that" before realizing that she is his contact (although it takes him a bit longer than that before it occurs to him that she is female).

So, between this and last night's rainout, I'm taking it as an omen.

Great find! I just added it to my long list of Met pop culture references (though not as long as Milton Bradley's 15th home run of the year).

In that spirit, enjoy this Jackie Gleason clip, particularly around the 0:54 mark:

BYRD BRAIN: After flying out to center in the sixth, Texas' Marlon Byrd had an exchange with Pedro Martinez as he jogged past the mound toward the third base dugout. Martinez held a thumb and forefinger less than an inch apart and explained, "He told me that he only missed by that much."

Byrd's reaction came when Martinez replied, "I only need you to miss by that much."
