batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Castillo leads off the second. So far, he's not sac bunting. I know this because he just fouled off a pitch. On a full swing.

batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Evans lines a nice looking double in his second at bat. He's on pace to hit a double every single time up.

Because a lineup should optimally be designed to score big in the first inning. Because the first inning is the only inning where the manager knows for sure which three batters are guaranteed to get an at bat. And if the batters at the top get on base, the entire middle of the order gets a chance to drive in runs. And the chances of scoring big are greater when no one's making outs on purpose. A manager who almost always calls for a sac bunt even in the first inning, as soon as his leadoff batter gets on base, is reducing the team's chances of scoring big.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 You see, I think that Randolph's managerial style reduces offense. And if you're costing your team runs, you could be costing your team some games. And if you're costing your team some games, you could be costing your team the right to play in the post-season. You might even be engineering one of the most embarrassing baseball collapses in modern baseball history.

And it's not the first time I've seen Willie put on a sac bunt in the first inning of a game in Coors. Any manager that doesn't assume going in, that they're gonna need seven or eight runs to win a game in this stadium is, in my opinion, too stupid to deserve to manage. And if Wilie does understand this, then the sac bunt in the first inning has no justification.
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 FOX sez: The Mets five run first inning is the most since August of last year.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I swear I heard Stockton say they had done it five times already this season .
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 Seth Smith robs Tatis of an extra base hit on a nice running catch in deep RF right in front of a screened-off area where a lady is sitting immersed in some conversation totally oblivious to the play coming right at her.
Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 I'm certain the incidence of five-run firsts indicates little or nothing.A good team will tend to do better, but I doubt the best team does the best. The Cubs have the best O in the league, but they've scored five times in the first once.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 I'd really like to see em tack on a few runs here.

And I'd bet that the incidence of scoring three or more runs in the first inning correlates very strongly with winning games. Teams score more runs in the first inning than in any other, and not by coincidence. The game's designed for that.AG/DC wrote:A good team will tend to do better, but I doubt the best team does the best. The best teams don't have to be the best at anything. Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 Nice strong inning by Vargas there getting the middle of the order 1-2-3.I even thought about PH-ing for him the previous inning when he was leading off, but with the pen hving to go all those innings (7?) last night it's best to see how far he can go.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Author Posted May 24, 2008 9 in a row for Vargas since a leadoff single in the 5th
batmagadanleadoff Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Evans the rookie hit his third double. Stockton sez it's the fifth time this week that a Met rookie debuted with three doubles in his first game.

I fully agree Willie Randolph doesn't manage as well as I'd like. The idea that the incidence of five-run firsts is a direct indicator doesn't work. It just confuses the matter more, in fact.
