Minaya is optimistic that Schneider will return to the lineup a day or two later. He's been out since Thursday with an infected thumb.{The way Casanova's starting to hit, I'm happy for Schneid to sit out a bit longer}Ramon Castro ; Return May4/28 -- Ramon Castro, making his first appearance for St. Lucie, caught Claudio Vargas' debut and spent seven innings behind the plate.Castro went 2-for-3 with a run scored.Moises Alou Return late April 4/27 -- Moises Alou will undergo an MRI on Monday to try to determine the cause of swelling in his left ankle. While Minaya insisted Alou probably is close to returning to the Mets and characterized the MRI as precautionary, he said a preliminary scan showed something in the ankle, possibly a slight fracture. {Any day now.} Pedro Martinez Return May -4/23 -- According to New York Newsday, Pedro Martinez (hamstring) is expected to throw a bullpen session in 10-14 days. Martinez said last week that he hoped to be off the disabled list by then, but the Mets have always said much differently. "He's progressing well," assistant general manager John Ricco said. "He's ahead of where we thought he'd be." {We're all still waiting for the the "big surprise". }Orlando Hernandez Return late May;4/24- New York Newsday reports that Orlando Hernandez (foot) is "practically back to square one" and will have to remain in a walking boot for at least two more weeks. Another setback for El Duque, who now seems unlikely to return before late May at the earliest and could be out much longer.{"Our voices will ring together, until the 12th of never"} Matt Wise:Return late April4/15 -- Matt Wise (forearm) appears likely to remain on the disabled list until the end of April. The Mets were optimistic Wise would be activated when eligible on Thursday, but he still hasn't started throwing.{Gee it's been a while?}Jason Vargas: Return July3/30 - Mets placed LHP Jason Vargas on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following hip surgery. He'll spend most of the rest of the year in the minors once healthy.Ambiorix BurgosLikely out for the season3/30 - Mets placed RHP Ambiorix Burgos on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, following following Tommy John surgery. Guest AG/DC Guests Posted May 1, 2008 Posted May 1, 2008 Some news on the thumb front.Mets C Brian Schneider was released from a hospital yesterday after six days of treatment for a staph infection (note: how do we keep going back and forth on this?) in his left thumb. Schneider said he wasn't sure when he will return to the field and that he could still go on the disabled list. The pain will need to subside enough that the thumb can withstand the pounding inside his catcher's glove. The problem started as a tiny blister during the Mets' series at Philadelphia two weekends ago. After it popped -- it was so small Schneider didn't even notice when that happened -- it became infected. Schneider first felt discomfort last Tuesday. The thumb was swollen when he woke up Wednesday, but he played through the pain after consulting with the team trainer and a hand specialist. By Thursday, though, it had swelled up so much that he was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics intravenously. That's part of a compilation of several wre service stories. A lot of strange injury news flying around.Cubs OF Alfonso Soriano said his right calf feels fine and he'll be "100 percent" when he returns from the disabled list today.I would hope so, since all the guy did was hop. will he be able to hop again?Giants LHP Noah Lowry will be shut down for a "significant" amount of time as he struggles to heal from a nerve injury in his forearm. No comment, other than that sounds strange and worth monitoring.Cardinals LHP Mark Mulder gave up nine runs in his fourth rehabilitation start, an indication he's far from ready to return from September shoulder surgery.Man, don't let Rick Peterson go. He curses these guys on the way out the door.Braves LHP Mike Hampton left a rehab start at Class AAA Richmond in the fourth inning when he was bothered by his injured chest muscle. The stars have crossed Mike Hampton. Someday, he is going to be injured by a pillow. Or a sock. Or a gentle breeze.
