Looks like the Jays & Cards are about to trade their expensive, oft-injured, and none-too-happy 3rd basemen for each other.
** A Challenge Trade!! **

Troy Glaus, coming off foot surgery and the Mitchell list, would head from Toronto to St Louis in exchange for Scott Rolen who's coming off various shoulder surgeries plus an extended stay in Tony LaRussa's doghouse.

Both still have to pass physicals (hardly a given) and it may need commish's approval if money is exchanged to even out the mega-bucks deals both have for the next few years.
($33mil over 3 yrs for Rolen -- $24mil over 2 for Glaus)

I'd much rather have Glaus. he's two years younger and his OPS+ the last three years have all been in the 120's. Rolen on the other hand has been pretty bad 2 of the last 3 years, I think his star has fallen and he is unlikely to ever be the same player again, chronic back injuries are especially worrisome. Rolen is also more expensive.

IMHO this deal is 100% about Rolen and LaRussa butting heads. Otherwise they are a wash, with Glaus having more power and Rolen a better glove.

I'd agree with that if I didn't think Glaus was a safer bet healthwise. Glaus is hardly a safe bet mind you, but Rolen is almost as likely as Moises Alou to give you a full season.

I think this is a pretty cool trade, with both sides getting a good player, but if I were a betting man I'd wager a tall frosty mug of golden delicious beer that the Blue Jays "win" this trade at least until Rolen loses interest again.
