From Adam Rubin's blog:

* Luis Castillo had knee surgery and "should be 100% by Jan 1st".
Also, The Mets are expected to make a strong push to re-sign him, although they will wait to at least explore what second basemen are available via trade.

* Duaner Sanchez appears to be finally healthy and will be playing winter ball in the DR

* Tim Teufel expected to be offered the managers job for the Port St Lucie team

Thoughts on Castillo: I always find it interesting when a guy picked up for the stretch run sticks around. It took two years for Ray Knight to show his quality.

Thoughts on Sanchez: I think the Mets went into 2007 expecting nothing from Pedro Martinez. I'm not sure they did the same with Duaner Sanchez. They should probably prepare for 2008 that way, though.

Thoughts on Teufel: It was interesting to see whether they'd hold him somewhat accountable for the disastrous season that Savannah had, or take the blame for under-equipping the team, and reward him for surviving it.

Where does Oberkfell land? Ken Davidoff wrote that the main reason the Mets didn't go ahead and hire Rudy Jamarillo was that they didn't want to make Randolph labor with an apparrent successor on his staff. That same value may keep them from bringing in Oberkfell (or Carter or Backman or other aspirants) to coach first. Jamarillo flat-out denied, when asked by Davidoff, that he's looking to manage, which is kind of a silly position to put a guy in.

I agree with Edgy about Sanchez. It would be wonderful if he came back at 100%, but the Mets can't afford to assume anything from him.

Castillo? 100%? How? did he get transported back in time?

It reminds me of the old joke:

Doctor: Mr. Epstein, the surgery was a complete success. We were able to reattach your finger, with no complications!

Epstein: So, i'll be able to play the violin?

Doctor: Absolutely

Epstein: That's funny.... I never could before!
