Guest Kid Carsey Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Nice graphic at the end of the game about teams blowing at sevengame lead after 9/12 being non-existent and only two blowing a six-and-a-half game lead after that. The word historical was thrown around here, and dismissed by some, but this is getting kinda bizarre. And I'm sorry, but Lee Mazzilli is a dick ...
Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 To put it in ironic perspective, if the Mets do fold, it can only be the 2nd worst slide in the history of the game. The '64 Phils will still be the first worst. But that was then and this is now.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Acta managed like it was game seven, the tease at the end was too much to take, and El Duque is to wear a boot on his foot fot the next seven to ten days and might not pitch again this regular season.......add post-season joke here..................................................
Guest Kid Carsey Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 They mentioned the '64 Phils and said this would be worse if I heard them right. I'm too lazy to do the research tonight.

Zvon Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 LMAO!Now THATS the post of the night Mendoza Line.
Guest Mendoza Line Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Thanks, Z. Finally learned to get an image up.Now, let's get those bastids tomorrow...
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 So does Willie still throw Pelfrey out there tomorrow or send Glavine and not get that extra days rest for Pedro,I mean it's fucking crunch time here.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Pelfrey will pitch Wednesday. The outcome of the Phils/StL game isn't going to change anything.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Back from the game. What a disappointment.Maine got out to SUCH a great start. Then Alou pulls up lame and everything turns to shit.We have an absolutely terrible bullpen, and our bench is pretty thin. We could use Delgado back right now.Edgy, it was an absolute pleasure. Hopefully we can do this again next season. bmfc1, it was great meeting you as well - those are pretty good seats you've got there!Thrilling, eye-opening game, just with the wrong results.By the way, any word on what the hell is wrong with Alou?

Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Oh good, it's not that serious. Nothing looked wrong with him, it was just really weird.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Met Valadius and caught up with bfmc again at the game. Val didn't hide under his seat. In truth, Met fans held the fort as best as we could, until the bitter end.A lot of frustration. I came across an iramets lookalike in a Koosman jersey and asked him to warm up and get ready to go in, despite his apparent pensioner age. I either found it less frustrating watching our pitching fail today than our defense fail yesterday, or I just was more miserable yesterday because Ms. Edgy was there feeling pity for me.Everybody there wants to hate Randolph, but I got the idea they want him to get past this and love him on the other side also. I mean, yeah, hate him for bringing in Motaweis, but Maine crashed early, and what's in his pen is what's in his pen.
Valadius Old-Timey Member Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 As I said to Edgy at the game, that stuff Hershiser said about Maine not having the right look in his eyes or whatever, I just remembered, when I went to Willie's charity auction thing, Maine was there, and he was just really really quiet. He was most often off in a corner somewhere, like he was hiding. I didn't make much of it until now, but now it speaks volumes.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 18, 2007 Posted September 18, 2007 Peterson has to get some heat for this also. When you go and talk to your starter, that next pitch he throws is on you. That next pitch he threw went 430 feet.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 After their 148th game, the 1964 Phillies had a six-game lead.
bmfc1 Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 After two nights with the Mets at RFK, I'm almost speechless. It was good seeing Edgy again and meeting Valadius although I don't know if I said anything coherent to either of them. It wasn't a good night for small talk or even coherent talk. At one point, I think I yelled "You suck Teddy Roosevelt!" This might make sense if you've seen the presidents races at RFK (and no, I wasn't drinking). Pre-game, I was in earlier than ever as the place opened early for season ticket holders. I've never seen the team come out of the dugout en mass and stretch. I saw the same guy I mentioned yesterday--Kevin, a Mets fan from Alaska. I told him about this forum and I hope he joins us. During the game, the same drunk, angry Mets fan was in the row in front of me... although his lovely wife wanted me to know that he wasn't drunk, just angry. At one point, he put on a Mets jersey and a bag over his head.Big picture, it was a terrific game. However, I'm not ready for the big picture at this time.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 That dude was mean-angry. Shit-a-bowling-ball angry. His wife was convinced that Randolph's bullpen choices were about him thinking he was Joe Torre. I'm not sure what that meant. Maybe she means that Willie is counting on some of his pumpkins in the bullepn turning into crystal coaches in the post-season as happened with Torre in the late nineties.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 I'm sure there is plenty of blame to go around for this debacle ,one thing though I would like to know, why Schoeneweis in four straight games after him being buried in the pen for what seemed like forever.

Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 The brutal fact is that Willie doesn't have a lot of good options when he has to hand the ball to somebody in the fifth or sixth innings.I still have a reasonable amount of faith in Feliciano, Heilman, and Wagner. (Is Wagner still with the club?) But Sosa, Mota, Schoeneweis, and Sele are all undependable. Smith, Collazo, and Humber haven't done much, at least recently. What Willie really needs is some seven- or eight-inning starts. More than anything else, I think middle relief has been killing this team lately.

I didn't make much of it until now, but now it speaks volumes.Problem is that that "look in the eyes" stuff didn't seem to affect Maine when he stepped up in a must-win NLCS game 6, or even just a week or so ago when he shut down the Braves in a game we absolutely needed coming off the earlier Phils' sweep.I'm always leery of those kind of "I can tell" pronouncements from analysts.I remember, for instance, how everyone in this town just KNEW that both Kenny Rogers & Jeff Weaver were going to melt in their 2006 playoff efforts on account of having to face NYC teams. Didn't quite work out that way.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 But, to play devil's advocate, maybe Maine DID have the look in his eyes last year in Game 6. He may have been pitching with more confidence last October than he is now.He really has little reason to have much confidence right now. He's fighting through a very extended period of awful, with only a few scattered exceptions.
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 Maine is quite so he must be a bottler, that's silly talk,Jose Lima is loud and brash on the mound ,doesn't make him great.
Benjamin Grimm Old-Timey Member Posted September 19, 2007 Posted September 19, 2007 A bottler? We'll have to add that term to the metirish glossary.Hershiser's point was more about poise than about noise. It was about confidence and determination, not brashness.
