I'm surprised to read that the Reds have not retired Rose's 14.

I'm sure that 14 has been kept dormant since Rose was gone. They're probably waiting (hoping) for a reinstatement before they do a ceremony. (As things stand now he wouldn't be allowed to attend.)

It's probably also why they waited 19 years to retire Concepcion's number. They may have wanted it to coincide with a Hall-of-Fame induction, but since that doesn't seem to be happening, they want to get it done while he's still alive. (Not that he has one foot in the grave or anything like that.)

He played in a post-season softball game of Retired Reds Luminaries to mark the end of Riverfront. Maybe they should have had a ceremony then. That may not work now. His standing is only getting worse.

Maybe they should have a retirement ceremony between races at a horse track. Or at a cock fight.

IIRC the NY Giants announced that Frank Gifford's number was being retired that night at some dinner function during the offseason or something a couple of years back? No fancy pre-game or half time ceromony at Giants Stadium or anything, just "Ladies and Gentlemen, Frank Gifford's uniform number is now retired. Thank you, don't forget to tip your waiters and please, try the veal."

Actually, wasn't Casey Stengel's number retirement by the Mets handled the same way as well? Not during a game, just a Press Conference and Stengel talking in front of an empty Shea Stadium?

The Reds could try that approach.
