Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 The Mets are reportedly still in the market for some new emergency stock for New Orleans. They supposedly want to grab an experienced catcher (are DiFelice and Reyes getting disrespected?), in case Sandy Alomar, Jr. won't accept a minor league assignment (he said earlier that he wouldn't) and a shortstop with more pop than Anderson Hernandez.I'm going to go ahead and nominate the recently sent down Blue Jay Russ Adams for the latter job.Search the scrap heap and help the Mets fill these all important roles!
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 What's Jason Phillips doing these days?,for whatever reason I have this impression that some veteran players have no desire to go to New Orleans,it can't be that bad there....can it?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Interesting.JP (no longer begoggled as Bono) is also Blue Jay property. He's currently competing with Sal Fasano for the backup catcher job. We may get a crack at the loser, though neither is hitting a lick.I'm guessing there's more than a few who don't share your fondness for bringing back Art Howe-era Metlies.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 My limited experience watching Jays games convinced me that Adams isn't capable defensively at SS.Is this a vote of nonconfidence in Mike Nickeas? I guess this kind of talk also signals that Anderson Hernandez isn't long for the org. He's doing the No. 1 jersey no favors.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Nickeas is slated for AA. I think they share your concern with looking for anything from Di Felice or Reyes if a catcher goes down.
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 In his blog for the Journal News, John Delcos notes that the Mets have signed 32-year-old third baseman Fernando Tatis to a minor league contract. The Los Angeles Dodgers released Tatis last Wednesday, three days after he failed to report to their minor league camp. Tatis was a non-roster invitee to Dodger camp, and hit just .158 this spring training, going 3-for-19 in 10 games. He played in 28 games for the Baltimore Orioles last season, hitting .250 with two homers and eight RBIs.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 The Dodgers could use Tatis this morning.I might be 102 years old and if you asked me about Fernando Tatis, I'd sputter out "Two grandslams in one inning! Yessirreee!"Boy, his career fell off a table in the new millenium.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Fernando originally signed with Texas, and had his greatest run with Montreal. I checked at SABR and guess which scout signed him for Texas?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Didn't Tatis do that with the Expos and hadn't he done it before or something crazy like that?
metirish Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 ]Sele: Go north or go homeShortly after his best outing of the spring, Aaron Sele said he'll retire if he doesn't make the Opening Day roster. Sele, 36, signed a minor-league contract, and the Mets hoped he could provide insurance at Triple-A New Orleans. "Totally out of the question," he said. "It's the big-league level or I'll go home." Sele, who allowed two hits and one run in five innings, still has a shot to make the team as a long reliever.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 One good outing gets him down to a 6.11 ERA and he's issuing an ultimatum. Nice.
Guest Johnny Dickshot Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Sele signed a minor league contract, dinny?
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Yup.If they didn't have room on the 40 for him back in January, what makes him think a 6+ ERA is gonig to get them to clear room on the 25?He's not standing on very good ground.

Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Anyone remember who Tatis had his 2 Granny inning off? ... That's right, it was Chan Ho Park!! (what's amazing is that he was still in the game)Maybe they can re-create that feat down in Zephyrland.I remember FT as mostly a feast or famine type of guy. Doubt we'll see him in Met-land unless it's under some unusual circumstances.Sele signed a minor league deal simply because there was no reason to sign him to anything else. But I think he was up front all along that he was fighting for a ML job - either here or by attracting enough attention to get one some place else.- and that it was all or nothing. This statement sounds like it just makes official what was pretty much expected all along.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 See, I don't expect him to be fighting for anything less than a big league job. The ridiculous part is his seeming expectation that he's done what he needed to do to win it.
seawolf17 Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 FK, you didn't give us a chance to guess... I knew it was Park.Fernando Tatis' career falling off the table = roids? You hate to just assume that, but...I don't know that Sele issued it as an ultimatum, per se; he's just saying he feels like he's reached a level where he shouldn't have to linger in AAA. No big whoop. Seeya, Aaron.
Frayed Knot Old-Timey Member Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 ]The ridiculous part is his seeming expectation that he's done what he needed to do to win it.I don't see where he's said that, or even implied it.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 You don't see "Totally out of the question; it's the big-league level or I'll go home" as having an implicit demand to go north?I suppose it doesn't have to be read that way, but it's sure hanging out there. I guess we need more context.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 It could also be interpreted as, "If I'm no longer good enough to pitch in the big leagues, then it's time to go home."

Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Here's what a New Orleans baseball cap looks like. I never bought a Tides cap because I always thought they were ugly. So I checked out what a Zephyrs cap looks like. Better, but I'm still not tempted.
Guest Edgy DC Guests Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 Those rosters may be a bit preliminary.
Guest Yancy Street Gang Guests Posted April 3, 2007 Posted April 3, 2007 The St. Lucie roster included Mike Pelfrey. I don't know if it's a 2006 roster that hasn't been updated yet, or if they're parking him on that roster for the first couple of weeks.
