According to Joel Sherman

] March 11, 2007 -- If you think the Roberto Alomar trade was a disaster for the Mets, you should know it could have been worse. Far, far worse.

An official who was involved in the discussions that led to that Dec. 11, 2001 deal said that one of the players the Mets made available to Cleveland was a Low-A shortstop named Jose Reyes. The official said the Indians liked Reyes, but simply did not have enough information from their South Atlantic League scouts to make an 18-year-old with just two pro seasons the key player in the deal rather than Alex Escobar.

Heh, I wonder how that would have ranked among "Worse Trades In Met History" Though some would say trades that actually happened were worse, Kazmir for Zambrano for instance!

At least this would have been someone who wasn't yet a stud for someone who still was considered a top tier ballplayer at the time of the trade as opposed to the crown jewel of the system for damaged and mediocre goods.

Very few people were paying Reyes any attention at the time that deal was made. So yes, I suppose it's a bullet dodged. Even then, it would be difficult to compare to Kazimir for Zambrano -- I don't know anybody who didn't think that the latter deal had a high probability of backfiring when it happened, while I wasn't under the impression that too many people ever thought the Alomar deal would backfire. And it didn't really backfire as it went down, simply because the Indians got basically nothing out of it either.

Hearing this, along with that story from months ago about how Wright was available to the Blue Jays in a trade in 2002 or so makes me think that there are likely plently of examples from plenty of teams of this sort of thing happening.

I'd be hard pressed to name a top Mets prospect who wasn't discussed as part of some potential deal or another.

It's not like journalists aren't packaging them left and right in all the make-believe deals they demand.

Easy to look back six years later Joel, and there is no way of knowing what Reyes would have done if traded to the Indians.

or just shows you how horrible Stevie really was, and how many of these good misses saved him from being literally tarred and feathered.

Sherman's slipping, no mention of the Yankees?
