MOBILE, Ala. -- Jake Peavy's disorderly conduct charge was dismissed after the San Diego Padres pitcher apologized for a confrontation with a security officer when he double parked to unload baseball gear at Mobile Regional Airport.

Peavy

Peavy was arrested in his hometown after he parked in front of the airport entrance Jan. 4. The 25-year-old player was taking equipment on a church mission to help children in the Dominican Republic.

When the airport officer ordered the vehicle moved or be ticketed, Peavy indicated he would take the ticket. Peavy then made a comment about "a real cop" as opposed to airport security and was subsequently arrested and booked into Mobile Country Metro Jail on the misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge, District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said.

Tyson told the judge at a court hearing Thursday the decision to dismiss came "on the recommendation of the individual officer involved and the chief of airport police."

Peavy apologized personally to the officer during a meeting, his attorney, Stoney Chavers, said. Peavy apologized a second time during his court appearance.

After his release from jail on a $350 bond, Peavy completed his trip to the Dominican Republic.

EDIT: I've changed the thread title, I'd rather not have that written in bold and attached to my handle. My apologies for my paranoia.

what exactly do you hate about cops? i think they treated peavy quite fairly.

edit- now my question looks like it came out of left field. for the record the original title of the thread was "i hate cops"

Well, sounds like (1) this guy wasn't a cop, but an airport security officer, and (2) he busted Peavy not because of his violation but because Peavy dissed him.

Answer:
="Edgy DC"](2) he busted Peavy not because of his violation but because Peavy dissed him.

Plus he dismissed the charges because Peavy got down on his knees for him (twice). Why? What happened between the incident and court appearance? Nothing except Peavy had to say he was sorry.

So basically the cop arrested him for giving him a snarky remark. And then recommended the charges be dismissed because he got an apology.

EDIT: Going easy on the hate

Edgy also wrote that he isn't a cop.

And even had he been one, he'd only have been one.

I think we've all been told about a million times not to fuck around at airports.

How about you don't fuck around with cops or semi-cops period?

Their job is difficult and stressful enough that they shouldn't have to take shit from people.

I hope you're not getting dizzy up there on that soap box.

It's good to know that I can be arrested for getting lippy with a cop. Certainly something for which I should be charged with a misdemeanor.

That's now on his record, even if it was dimissed, right? One of the lawyerly-inclined might have to correct me on that.

="Edgy DC"]Edgy also wrote that he isn't a cop.

Since when can non-cops make arrests? I'm guessing he was a rent-a-cop.

There is no law against being a smart-ass, airport or no.

Technically, any citizen can make an arrest. Easy on the hate.

I'll take your word for it. I'm not going to try it myself.

Agreed. Hate IS an ugly emotion.

Many years ago when I first came here I got a ticket for being lippy to an undercover cop in Times Square subway station at a very early hour in the morning.

I should say I was caught smoking and got busted..I got the ticket for being lippy I believe.

I'm not saying the cop was right. I'm saying that no good comes from being 'lippy' or being a smart ass to a cop. So why do it?

Why give an officer a reason to even think about giving you a hard time?

Don't prostrate yourself before them, but have a little common sense.

And it's a soup box.

My experiences with the police, and they were quite numerous as a younger
man, is that being polite and respectful goes a long way with an officer who
puts up with a lot of bullshit during the course of a work week.

I got a couple of whack stories, but I suppose they're better left untold here.

Be nice to cops, you never know when you'll need one.

It's my experience that cops (and security guards) are like the rest of us...some of them are assholes and others aren't.
