71 meets 17 at Mets camp

Talk about the two extremes at the Mets' mini-camp which ended Friday; 71-year-old Al Jackson, an original Met, is set to begin his 39th year in the organization and his 46th in professional baseball while 17-year-old catcher Francisco Pena, son of Yankees coach Tony Pena, is looking forward to his first major-league spring training next month. "I still enjoy what I'm doing," said Jackson, whose weight hasn't changed since his playing days. "I hold the record that hopefully no other pitcher will break in the near future. I lost 20 games in [1962 and again in 1965]. As Roger Craig told me, I had to be pretty good to get all those starts."

Pena, who turned 17 in October, is anxiously looking forward to his first major-league camp. "My father never put any pressure on me to sign with the Yankees," said Francisco, who played for the Mets' Instructional League team last fall. "He just told me to go where I would feel the most comfortable and that's why I'm with the Mets."

Good to see that Al Jackson, one of my top two all time favorite Mets is still in the organization, and contributing.

When I get to that magic number of posts, I'd like to have Al's picture as my avatar. If there's one as a coach, that woudl be great.
