stevejrogers Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 I think tonight is the final broadcast. The Bambino got it for the Yanks. A mild upset if you ask me, only because Mickey Mantle, Don Mattingly and Derek Jeter all have a large amount of their fan base still very much alive and all. I would have guessed it'd be Mickey. After all, he WAS the first mega superstar of the TV age and probably the biggest baseball pop-culture icon of the post war era (based on his post career memorabillia craze)I've always likened Mantle as Elvis to DiMaggio's Sinatra in that regard and almost suspect that Ruth gets treated as an "afterthought" in the mind of Yankee fans, or at least an icon that belongs more to general baseball history and lore.Eh, my take anyway
MFS62 Old-Timey Member Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Yes. the Babe was important to the history and lore all of baseball. But If he didn't get it for the Yank HTH, that would be like someone winning the Preidential election without winning his home state.Later
