* In Thurs afternoon's Tiggers-ChiSox game, Sean Casey lined a single into leftfield just off the top of the glove of a leaping Joe Crede at 3rd. But Casey apparently thought Creded snagged it and so didn't run immediately. By the time he realized the ball was in the outfield, the LFer was coming up gunning and nipped Casey at 1st by an eyelash.
Mark that a 5-7-3 putout in your scorebook.


* Wednesday night in SD, Dodger manager Grady Little comes out to the mound to talk to Brad Penny. Penny was pissed off (big surprise!) at the ump and was jawing at him as Little arrived. Grady reaches the mound but then comes off the keep the ump away from his pitcher. He then returns to the mound which the umpsrule as a 2nd trip because he had left the dirt area and then returned. Now THAT's one I had never heard of before.
Both Little & Penny also wound up getting ejected for their troubles.

It's my understanding Bruce Bochy was aware enough to point out Grady's goof (and know the rule!)

That was Grady's first Dodger ejection of the year -- Seems like WWSB has only been bounced once or twice in his entire managerial career, which is pretty unusual.

Tomo Ohka came up with the bases loaded twice tonight , batting lefthanded for the 1st time in his career, and had 2 hits and 4 RBI.

Yup, it was Bochy who brought it to the umps' attention.
All seemed a little odd to me, mainly because as Little was talking to the home plate ump, said ump was walking with him - almost escorting him even - back to the mound. Seemed like more of an odd technicality really rather than a rule break - but I guess rules is rules.

I saw both these highlights just now and Ive never ever seen anything like both of em in all my years watching the game.

In the Grady thing--that ump deeked him!
Walks him back to the mound and waves all is fair.
Pads manager Bochy, very heads up, has to inform the ump of the rules
(which I really dont think were meant to be applied to a situation like that).
That was wack.
And I never knew it was literally the mound-I thought it was when the manager crossed the baseline to the field.
That whole thing was just rediculous.

The Casey thing---they are still searching back in the boxscores to see when (and if ever) that happend last. In the CBSsportsline play by play its listed as this:"Casey grounds out to left",lol.
And if you see the clip--Ive never seen a guy run quite as bad and as slow as him--he looked like he was running in place-his arms moving like a chicken. He'll never live that play down.

That's the part that confused me. I always heard that a visit became a visit when the ump crossed the baseline. Seems to me that you'd then have to cross and re-cross THAT to make it constitue another trip -- but apparently the rule reads otherwise. Kudos to Bochy for knowing that (I bet Bobby V knows it too)

It's got to be the actual mound --- I guess --- in part, because the rare manager who is also a position player is constantly between the lines.

Strikes me, though, that the ump is deferring to the letter and not the spirit of the rule.

Does that mean that a manager can come on the field, but not on the mound, more than once an inning? And couldn't the pitcher just walk off the mound to talk to him by first base or something?

Crazy-assed rule.
