]Wilson knocking on Minaya's door
BY DAVID LENNON
Newsday Staff Correspondent

August 18, 2006

WASHINGTON - As the Mets continue to discuss a potential trade for the Diamondbacks' Shawn Green, the agent for Preston Wilson contacted general manager Omar Minaya yesterday to let him know of the outfielder's interest in coming to New York.

Wilson, who was released by the Astros on Tuesday, is now free to sign with other teams and his agent, Bob Bry, said yesterday that he was looking for the best fit. The Mets definitely have a vacancy with Cliff Floyd on the disabled list, and with the struggles of Lastings Milledge (.220), there also should be an opening in rightfield once Floyd returns, hopefully later this month.

The Mets have until Aug. 31 to trade for a player who will be eligible for the postseason roster, but Bry emphasized that Wilson - the stepson of Mookie - could sign with another club soon if the right offer comes along.

"It's more about the situation than anything else," Bry said.

I'd be happy to see this happen. I think Preston is a better option than Green; he'll cost less money and you don't have to give up any players to get him.

Absolutely. Go get him.

Sorry, Mookie, but the Mets don't need your boy.

Think about it. A guy who strikes out a lot and hits into a lot of double plays. Can't bunt. No speed (anymore). Marginal defense.

Sure, he can pop one out of the ballpark from time to time, but in a clutch situation is more likely than not to whiff rather than put the bat on the ball.

Sounds a lot like Victor Diaz

I'd rather have Endy Chavez. Great defense. Great throwing arm. Speed in the field and on the bases. Puts the ball in play. good bunter. good situational hitter. Good pinch hitter/defensive replacement off the bench in the playoffs.

No contest.

I like Endy, too, but I'm not looking for a bunter or bench player. The Mets are going to need a starting right fielder.

And maybe that can be Endy. But I'd like another option or two.

I'd prefer Green to Preston but he also comes at a higher price, both for right now and the fact that he's signed for next year.
A lot depends on how desperate the Snakes are to get rid of him

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Preston Wilson signed with the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, after being released by the Houston Astros earlier this week.
Wilson batted .269 with nine home runs and 55 RBIs with the Astros, but disappointed them with a lack of power. The Cardinals hope to improve their lineup against left-handed pitching.

I just checked the Cards roster to see who is playing the outfield and was surprised to see Timo Perez is with them, they seem to have a pretty weak outfield so maybe Wilson will help.

...such as Tom Glavine, whom they face next week.

Based on the way he's hit against the Mets in the past, I really don't want to face him in the playoffs.

Another ex-Met Wilson, Vance, signed a 2-year extension with the Tiggers. Good for him.

Wilson hit four HR in his first four games as an Astro. Then five more in his next 95. He was challenging Ausmus for most GIDP. We didn't need that. Neither do y'all. So what if he went yard his first game with the Cards. So did a bunch of other guys in that game.....could've been the weather.

Good points.

I'm kind of OK with platooning Endy and Milledge down the stretch.

We can do better in a rightfielder, but we can do worse, and they both have skills that can take you by surprise in the eighth spot.

I'm more concerned with getting Floyd healthy and going at this point.

At almost any point this season, really.
