There were a slew of Met-fan radio callers who were prematurely going overboard in their comparisons between the NY short-stops early in the season.

But, at this point, it's not so crazy anymore - even as Jeter is putting up his best season since maybe '99.

Pee Wee Reese both made the Hall of Fame, and there were constant arguements among fans in in New York over who was better. But (without looking at records) I don't think that either of them ever put up numbers like that.

As much as it kills me to say this, Jeter really is an excellent player and difficult not to think of him as a DiMaggio of his time (obviously the numbers arent comparable, but more in a brand positioning/mindset frame). Hes a Hall of Famer already.

But damned if Reyes isnt nearly as good right now, better than DJ was at similar ages, and is a superior fielder, baserunner, better power hitter and more exciting player already. If you could choose one to build a team around, knowing only what we did through last night, youd almost have to pick Reyes.

Funny really that Jeets even for his greatness might be the 3rd best SS in NY!

Very true.
He is the Alvin Dark (the third NY shortstop in the discussions I mentioned) of his generation. :)

Thanks for the great comparison..

I think Jeter has true class. They were in Detroit 2 years ago and Jeter stood at homeplate with the Mayor of Detroit when one of the Mayors aides literally stuck a pen and a baseball in Jeters face. Derek had that split second WTF look, signed the ball shook the mayors hand and smiled..

Better than how I would react..I'd probably say do you need 200 bucks that bad?

Back to topic (sort of):
A quick check of [u:784d9832e4]Runs Created[/u:784d9832e4] (a mathematical approximation aimed
at showing how many runs said player's offensive input produced) shows:
Jeter = 92; Reyes = 91, to this point in the season.

Or, [u:784d9832e4]Jeter = 7.74 RC/per 27 outs[/u:784d9832e4] (an approx # of runs an "all-Jeter" lineup would score per game)
Reyes = 6.79 RC/27
The difference is due to Reyes making more outs on the season (lower OBA)

Last season Reyes = 4.26 RC/per 27
