Ok - talk about clutch...



In 1982, The Cardinals were losing 3-1 in the sixth inning of game 7, When Keith Hernandez came up with the base loaded. Mex hit a 2 run single to tie the game....

In 1986, With the Mets losing 3-0 in the sixth inning of game 7, Mex comes up again with the base loaded, and hits a 2-run single to make it 3-2...

If he was really clutch he would have hit grand slams both times.

That's what Mr. Beltran would have done.

Both are impressive --- game sevens being game sevens --- but many definitions guys use for clutch would punch in "late and close" standandards that would keep those situations from being culled with the data.

What struck me was the similarity of the two situations, with the results also being similar..

No doubt. And I don't mean to demean those situations at all. But rather, I'm only trying to point out how hard it is to objectively wrap ourselves around the question.

Captain Intangibles would have not only hit grand slams, but then pitched the last three innings, striking out all nine batters on twenty-seven pitches.
