Speaking of Ruben Gotay

I know two things about Julio Gotay, Ruben's uncle from the 1960s Cards.

The first is that he was supposedly pious to the point of superstition, fearing even touching a cross or crucifix. I imagine his teammates had fun with this, as did the teammates of a similar fictional character in one of Bret Sabermetric's stories.

The other I learned last night in an foggy allusion by Bill James. He supposedly threw out all of his mail. Every last piece for months until Curt Flood found it all piled up. Does anybody know the story behind this?

May have been mentioned already but Julio Gotay was the opposing SS in the very first Met game.

I 'm happy for Keppinger. Does anyone think he damanded a trade, seeing the opportunities diminish with the Mets?

He will have more of a shot in KC. I hope he does well. Not that he's goin got be the next Utley, but maybe a McEwing/Woodward bench type.

He really didn't have any standing to "demand" a trade; the best he could do is request one.

It was pretty clear that the Mets didn't see him as a potential starting second baseman. And they don't seem to have a designated second baseman of the future. I think the Mets simply think Gotay is a better candidate for that role than Keppinger is.

And the Royals probably feel the opposite way.

Gotay big improvement over Woodward defensively

Rob Neyer "loves" this deal for the Royals, saying "upside is great, but so is being able to actually play baseball."

Seems some Royals fans feel Gotay was oversold defensively and has also gotten fat. Either way, not a biggie.

I like his upside. He has shown doubles power in the minors (over 40). And because he had had very few stolen bases, that indicated to me that those are power, not speed, doubles. As he approaches the Bill James age at which players begin to realize their power potential (26-29), I feel many of those doubles will turn into home runs. And he hasn't struck out an inordinate amount, either. He could be a Jose Valentin in the making.
