The thing with Lima is that he is not, um.....what's that term you use for pitchers who get hitters out, don't give up a lot of walks and hits, have ERA's under 5.00---oh, yeah, ---good. He's not good. Yeah, that's it.

Scary points include that he is apparently "similar" to Bobby Jones and Darren Oliver (similarity scores in the 900 range). Also, he has racked up over $24,000,000 in earnings during a career that included one very good and two good seasons out of about 12.

The DFA is preferable to the outright release because of the outside chance that another team is stupid enough to want him.

I don't really get the pleasure of seeing a guy get his livlihood beaten out of him while he's on your team, but seeing as he's been brought up twice, both times as result of not one but two "regulars" missing from the rotation, it's tough to place the Mets at a serious fault for going to him here. It's not like there's Pedro Junior waiting his turn in Norfolk.

Besides, it's not like this is really news of any kind. A DFA of Lima following today's game was a virtual guarantee no matter how things turned out.
He was only called up because of the temporary starter shortage/impending DH and there was no chance he was going to get another start unless more injuries suddenly pile up. This was a one-off deal all along for a guy who needs to be sent down to add tomorrow's starter and he can't be sent back down without first being DFA'd.

Right. Besides Heilman, I think Oliver earned a shot at starting last night.
